Is it ok? I've been putting axid into their bottles for the past couple of days, and I find it WAY easier than having to force them to swallow it from a dropper or syringe in their mouths, only to have it drool down their chins! They don't seem to mind the bottle...so my only question is if they are getting the full medicine, or is it diluted or something??

sorry if that was a dumb question!

It should be fine, but just make sure they are drinking the entire amount of formula. (of course)

When ours were on reflux medication, I asked our pedi about this. He said to NOT do this. He said you cannot guarantee they are getting the full medicine this way. In addition, they are supposed to get the medicine 20-30 minutes before the bottle in order to work so mixing with the bottle is not an option. I would recommend talking to your pedi before you continue...

There is a tiny bottle/nipple thing we bought at walmart for a couple dollars that you could try. You put the medicine in the little bottle part and they take it from a nipple. It works really well for any medicine.

What I do in order to make sure they get the full dose of medication, is prepare their bottles, then, take a separate bottle, pour off about 1 oz of formula into the other bottle, and add the meds to that 1 oz. I first offer them the bottle with the meds in it, and only once they have finished it, do I offer them the other bottle with the rest of the formula. This way, you are sure they are getting the full dose.

Also, RRTwins is right that reflux meds need to be given 20-30 minutes before feeds, but that excludes axid. Axid is fine when it is given together with meals. I specifically asked my ped about this, and he said with axid it is totally fine to do it this way as oppose to prevacid or zantac which need to be given before meals.

    Good Luck to you!

We would put the Zantac in a syringe and then give it while they were drinking their bottle. We have also given the syring of medicine and then quickly stick a paci in . . . the would such (and swallow).

    Good luck!

I also was worried if they were getting it all in the bottle even if they finished the entire bottle. I used the syring and just dropped the mecidine in a nipple from one of their bottle and let them suck from that. They took it with no problems most of the time so long as I gave it right before their bottle. Early on my id g/g were on so many medications I didn't want to chance them not getting it. Now they are 12 months old and take it directly from the syring with no problem or I put it in their food. It is all about what works best for you and your baby.

We've been putting their vitamins and their Nystatin (for thrush) in their bottles. It's such a mess otherwise! Plus, combined doses is 6 times per day, per baby! It's such a hassle I'm apt not to do it otherwise... Maybe I'm just lazy! [IMG]

This is the correct way to do it to make sure they're getting all the meds...

Iris had to take some medicine she didn't like the taste of and we gave it to her through the bottle (pedi said it was ok). when she figured it out she refused the bottle for a couple of days thinking it would be medicine. she has gotten better with the bottle since but has not returned to her previous feeding style. she's always reluctant and will try a couple of times before taking to it.
