pullups: yay or nay?

DD is doing so well with pt right now....but there comes a time in the day where she just doesn't want to wear her panties & wants diapers back on. She's still wanting to use her potty, though & I thought maybe it's time to try some pullups. I always thought before we wouldn't use them; I've heard they can actually make PT harder. But since she's refusing panties, I'm starting to change my mind. However, dh is still opposed to them. Since he's not the one home with them doing the PT, I figure :p on him! :)

    What's your opinion on them?

A mod might want to move this to the PT forum since it might get better responses.

Anyway, my personal opinion is that they aren't that great. Does your DD still want to use the potty when her diaper is back on? For my twins (they are 3 though), the second they get a pull-up on, they throw all caution to the wind and just pee in the pull-up. Very rarely have they taken them off and gone to the potty. I found that just undies or letting them run around naked worked best for us!

I am not speaking from experience so feel free to take my comments with a grain of salt. That said... my mother is an elementary school principal. They have several classes of preschool in her school as well. She has always told me to avoid the Pullups because they will delay potty training. She said that from her 15 years of experience watching all sorts of kids, those who go straight to underpants do better. Those that have Pullups can regress and/or put off full potty training because the Pullups are an intermediate step. Her advice is that if your child gets tired of the underwear, switch back to diapers for the rest of the day. Explain to her that it's ok to wear a diaper if she needs, and that she can still pee in the potty if she wants when she has a diaper. But avoid Pullups because they seem like underwear to kids, so they get confused and don't always understand that it's ok to pee in some underwear (Pullups) and not others.

Hmmmmmm, I'm not sure if this will answer your question. I'll tell you what we do.

Pull ups are called "Sleepy Underwear" in our house. K&M wear them for nap and bedtime. They were told that they shouldn't pee in their "Sleepy Underwear." They now wake up from naps dry and are dry from bedtime on occasion.

Do you still have diapers in the house? One of the things we did was use up all of the diapers and told Michael (my last to train) we couldn't buy anymore diapers.

    Good Luck!

I wouldn't ruin what you have going on. We do use pullups for naps and bedtime. Our kids will not go in the potty most of the time if they're wearing pullups.

That being said, you are doing wonderfully!! You are at a stage that I could have only dreamed of doing at that age. Both of my kids ask for their pullups and the best thing is to address the need for the pullup. We do undies or naked bottoms. Yes, we still have accidents but using pullups just makes it harder since they have "diapers"

She does still want to go potty when she has her diaper on.....and I guess that's the hard part b/c then she can't do it by herself. Diaper/panties seems to make no difference to her in her motivation to use the potty. Yesterday I was able to keep her in panties till naps (about noon) and kept them dry (yay!!), but when she woke up she wouldn't put them back on. It seems to be more of a comfort thing for her. Actually, she really wanted to wear her panties with the diapers on top, but I said "one or the other!"

I only used them if we were going on a longer car ride and bedtime.

Now, I have to get Peyton to train (stubborn little man!) and I am basically doing like a PP said and just telling him once these diapers are gone, that's it!

I recently went to a talk about potty training. The expert said that pull ups feel the same as diapers (like paper), so kids don't learn properly using pullups. She said pullups are fine to use when needed. But she said for "real" potty training to use potty training underpants with a cover. So they feel the cotton and don't like the wet feeling, versus pullups which feel just like diapers. make sense?

I would also only use them at bedtime or naptime. We did with John (he never really needed them though). I think you should let her be naked for a while then if she does not want to wear underwear at one point in the day. Good luck!

Yup we use pullup training pants at night and call them special night undies. I make a HUGE deal of them keeping their stars, spiders, etc on the front from disappearing aka peeing in them. They wear undies all day long. So glad I have a huge arsenal from my sister of undies! They can go through anywhere from 1-6 a day. But I wont go back to diapers/pull ups during the day. Just got a bottle resolve carpet and couch cleaner and hope for one day not to need it.

ETA Oh i do put undies on them rather than naked as Josh can spray 4 feet when his bladder is full and has hit the computer more than once! LOL

I am working on PT my twins (2 yrs. 5 months.) For those of you who let them run naked, how do you keep their hands out of their private areas? I am sort of a "clean freak" and I cannot fathom letting them run around and possibly pee on everything! I bought some super thick potty pants from something like Potty Scotty and Potty Patty, but they are ultra bulky. I have one who will pee when told to sit on the potty. If I don't make him he pees his pants--like every 10 minutes. The other twin doesn't have an interest....

I started again with Peyton since Jake has been trained for months, Peyton is frustrating me!

I just keep Peyton naked from the waist down and I just put him on the potty every half hour or so. I tell him to just try.

I have personally never used pull ups and will not with any of my kids. To me they are just like diapers, JMO.

Thanks for posting this question. I was wondering the same thing. Question for those that either did naked or underwear, what did you do during naptime? As a PP stated, I was thinking about using pull-ups during naptime and bedtime, since they are still in cribs.
