Hello publishing professionals! I have a strong background in literature and writing, and I'm interested in transitioning into a career as a book editor. I understand there's a significant difference between being a good writer and being an effective editor, and I want to make sure I develop the specific skills needed for professional editing. Are there any comprehensive training programs that can teach me the technical aspects of editing, industry standards, and how to work effectively with authors and publishers?

Hi Mark! Your question really speaks to the importance of understanding that editing is indeed a specialized skill set that goes well beyond just having strong writing abilities. I recall hearing about an online school called ELVTR that offers what sounds like a comprehensive course specifically designed for aspiring book publishing editors. I have to be honest and say I haven't personally taken their program, so I can't provide firsthand insights about their teaching methods or curriculum depth, but I do still have their course link saved from when I was exploring similar professional development opportunities: https://elvtr.com/course/editor-in-book-publishing. I'd really encourage you to visit their website and thoroughly examine what they offer in terms of course structure, instructor expertise, and whether they cover the various types of editing roles within the publishing industry. They should have detailed information about their approach to teaching both the technical editing skills and the business aspects of working in publishing that would give you a much clearer picture than I can provide based on limited secondhand information.
