I have some questions about PTL, and my questions may be a bit unscientific, but bear with me. I haven't had any PTL symptoms, but the more I read about it (whether here or in books), the more scared I get. I know not to read too much, but as you all know with twin preg, it's hard not to worry. I'm so much more concerned everytime I have a BH; I slug down a glass of water and go to the bathroom!

So my question; for those of you who have experienced PTL with your twin preg; were the twins your first preg? Did you have PTL with previous preg?

I guess I'm hoping that having carried two singletons to term will reduce my risk or likelyhood to develop PTL issues. Does it? Does having a "proven cervix" mean anything when you are carrying twins?

Just hoping to ease my worries on this subject....

  2. I have a child previous to this pregnancy that I carried to 41 weeks. I had to be induced then c-section. This pregnancy I had PTL 2 times. I think that the cervix thing does probably play a part, because despite tons of contrax etc, I only effaced and did not dilate. It takes me too long to progress which in this case helped me out.

However, as my dr explained to me, the weight of the children in utero and the hormones released is what causes PTL both of these are kinda out of your control. You just have to watch for the signs and be prepared. Everything else is in Gods hands!

Jennifer, I'm with you! I feel like reading about all the things that "could" go wrong make me hyper aware of every little thing and ends up making me worried for nothing. I don't have any signs of PTL, never even had a BH..and my ob says that things will most likely stay that way. So I'm just being grateful for the lack of complications and trying to stay positive that things will continue down this path! Hopefully things will stay that way for you too!

Our girls were my first pg.

I didn't have any BH or contractions until 30.4wks. That day I had been to my Peri, had my first NST which was totally normal, and went home. That night I starting having contractions every 7min. I called my Peri, went to the hospital and was admitted for 11 days. I came home on modified bedrest and a terb pump. Didn't deliver untiil 35.3wks. Throughout that entire time, my cervix didn't progress until I delivered and even then it was only a fingertip. But, contrax were every 3min with the pump at that point and they scheduled the c/s that night.

Just use common sense. Stay hydrated, be aware. If you aren't sure, call your Peri. That's what they are there for.

My guys were my first - and they don't know if I had PTL because I was having twins or because I have an incompetent cervix - I had no idea what I was getting myself into - or what it would feel like...

The #1 predictor of having PTL is having had it before, regardless of # of babies in there...so I would think having had other babies you carried to term would be a good thing! Just pay attention to your body - you'll know if something feels different...even when I didn't realize I was contracting, something didn't feel right and I called L&D - I always seemed to 'know' when it was enough to need to go in to be checked....
