I was told by my perinatologist today that I should be eating more protein. I've kind of had a poultry and meat aversion since being pregnant. What are you ladies doing to get more protein in your diet?

Try Ensure or Boost High Protein shakes! I drank 3-4 a day. [IMG]

Peanut butter or nuts. I eat a lot of peanut butter on celery.

Meat and Eggs haven't appealed to me this pregnancy, either. Have you tried dairy? It's great because you have protein and calcium. I drink about 3-4 gallons of lowfat milk a week. Yogurt and cheese are good, too. It is really good because it keeps my hydrated since I am not a fan of water but gives me protein instead of me having to eat lots of meat... also is easier because it is a liquid and it doesn't give me an uncomfortably full feeling. I like peanut butter toast, too.

That's awesome that your peri would be talking to you about your protein intake. In my experience, it seems like doctors don't seem to be very concerned with the mother's nutrition (unless they're not gaining weight at all). I drink Boost drinks to supplement protein. Like Mary said, other good sources outside of meat would be anything dairy. For example an 8 oz. glass of milk has 8 grams of protein. If you're not into Boost or Ensure, there are also protein powders you can get, usually from a health food store or online. You can make milkshakes or smoothies with them.

Some supplemental drinks have a ton of sugar, so be careful there.

Cottage cheese is a great source of protein.

I've started buying Fage Greek yogurt from Trader Joe's. In a 7 oz. container, there's 17 grams/protein. I just add some fruit and/or granola to it.

Also, I use whey protein powder to make fruit smoothies. 1 scoop of poowder adds 12 grams/protein.

Other sources are nuts, legumes, soy.

I recommend shooting for 120-150 grams/protein/day. It's a lot, but the benefits are sooooooo worth it.

    Good luck.

When I was pregnant with the twins, i craved big salads (I know, no fun). I would put hard boiled eggs, chic peas, pinto beans (any kind of legume) chunck of ham, turkey or anything I could put in my mouth basically! [IMG]

Pulses and beans are good sources of protein, too, if they appeal to you - I have a craving for spicy food, so hot Indian food based on pulses with yoghurt raita is a stable with me [IMG]
