We went in for an ultrasound yesterday and they found some problems with baby B. According to the ultrasound report he has ascites (fluid in the belly), lateral ventricle dialatlion likely caused by hydrocephalus, and though his heartrate is normal they suspect decreased contractability (the radiologist showed us how their heartbeats look different. The radiologist and my OB are unsure what would cause these problems in combination and I am in the process of trying to get to UCSF for more accurate diagnosis.

My question is regarding the hydrocephalus, from what I can find the head measurement (BPD-biparietal diameter) is at the upper level of normal. It is also less than a cm different than twin A who has all normal measurements. Is it possible that he doesn't really have hydrocephalus? I am hoping it is possible the hydrecephalus diagnosis is wrong b/c ascites seems to have a better prognosis when not combined with other anomolies. My OB didn't seem all that concerned with the heart rhythm and the ultrasound doesn't say anything about organ deformities, etc.

I am terrified and am having a very hard time waiting to get some more definative answers. Please send our little boy good thoughts.

I'm sorry, I don't have any experience with this, I wish I had some words of wisdom for you - I just wanted to say that you and your son are in my thoughts and prayers, I can only imagine how scared you are, I pray things are going to be fine for him, and that you can have some peace about it...

    hang in there!

Best of luck to your little ones. It is horrible when you don't know exactly what is going on in there.
I have had a wrong diagnosis from u/s at 20wks. My obstretician told me it was highly likely that one of my identical twins has Down Syndrome or some other chromosonal abnormality. The next u/s with a fetal speicalist showed that this was unlikely to be the case. I hope you get some answers soon.

I to have no info on your particular diagnosis, but I have been experience similar misdiagnosis/changes in diagnosis since the start of the pregnancy with one of my twins. Although my twin B does have some problems, what they originally thought has proven to be incorrect. As the babies grow they will be able to see clearer. My experience has led us to taking a pen and paper to the scans and asking our own questions, writing down measurements etc. Make sure you ask for regular scans to reassure yourslef and make sure you ask as many questions as you want.

I hope all goes well. You are in my thoughts. Keep us posted on the outcome.

I don't have any info on a misdiagnosis of hydro, but I can tell you my first child was born with hydrocephalus and an arachnoid cyst on his brain. It was not diagnosed in the womb and we actually didn't discover the problem until he was 6 months old. I will pray for you and your family. I just wanted to say that my son, who is now 3 1/2 yrs old, is beautiful and smart, no developmental delays, no outward physical differences, and his condition is so well managed that you would never know that he has anything "wrong" with him. Hopefully your baby is perfect, but I just wanted to say that even if he is not modern medicine is an incredible thing and they can do amazing things for our kiddos when they catch it early.

I would like to add that I worked with a woman who has hydrocephalus a couple years ago. She is incredibly intelligent and I would never have known had she not told me!
Good luck to you and your family. I will be thinking about you.
