Probiotic formula?

We've tried so many different formulas over the past couple of months for one reason or another (high calorie preemie formual, sensitive tummies, reflux). Currently we give our boys Enfamil A.R. for their reflux which has rice starch added. They seem to spit up much less now, however, they are both constipated, and I've since read that rice cereal can cause that. So now I'm wondering if we should try a probiotic formula. Please share your experience, positive or negative, with probiotics. I've seen a couple of posts where people said they made a huge difference in their babies. I'm also wondering if it would be safe for our boys considering they were very premature (11 weeks).

    Thanks in advance!

I don't know about a formula specifically, but I've been giving a probiotic supplement to my kids since they were very young. I use Garden of Life's Primal Defense Kids -- it's a powder, and you can mix a tiny spoon into any formula or milk. It doesn't taste like anything.

I swear by this stuff, as I think it keeps my kids healthy. I didn't use it as early as 3 months, however, as I take probiotic supplements myself, and they all got it through my breastmilk for about 10 months.

Check with your ped, but I do think it's safe even this early.

I have used probiotic with all of my boys. I just buy the probiotic in a powder form and add it to the formula they are already getting. It has been really good for us with gas relief. one of my twins always had diarhea and the other was always constipated and the probiotics have leveled them both out. my boys were nine weeks premature and had lots of tummy troubles and were really coliky.I tried a lot of different things but found probiotics worked the best. I would talk to your pedi ora natural path if you are concerned about safety.

Thanks for the responses! Where can I find the powder form of probiotics if I were to supplement their formula? Do they sell it at Target/Walmart, or is purchased online? We go to their pediatrician in one week for their 4 month checkup and I will ask her about it then.

I get my probiotics at a health food store. For the little kids, it's in a powdered form, like Becca's. Mine says on the label that it is safe for infants.

I didn't know they made special formula, but I have always given my girls probiotics and with good results. As infants they got a powered added to their milk whenever they had to take antiboitics or showed signs of upset stomaches. Now they get a pro-biotic drink, called Yakult, every morning and have since they were 3.

Our girls have always been on high calorie probiotics so i'm not sure that they helped but i don't think they hurt. They were very colicky and still are dealing with reflux but their weight gain has been fabulous. I hope you find a supplement that helps!

My pediatrician just recommended that I try to find whatever probiotics I get in a packet because of oxidization issues that can kill off the bacteria. She recommended Florastor but I'm still using a powder tub version until we run out.

I love probiotics, just make sure you check the list of "other ingredients" in the kind you purchase. Especially if your little ones haven't tried much of anything else. My boys have major food issues. I bought some probiotics to help them, but there was also rice in it and trace amounts of milk and soy. They actually couldn't even tolerate the type I found them. So. I'm still looking for them.
