So we just got back form the PED and Pharmacy and we took our first dose of Prevacid Solutab. We dissolved it in the syringe like the Doctor said and I could not get all the bead sout.

    Any ideas?

So glad you are getting to switch to a different med. I wish you all the luck with it. You guys deserve it. The Prevacid is a pain. After I dropped it in the syringe of water I would constantly swirl it as I was giving it and watch the beads go out of the syringe. So I would be rolling it in their mouths as I gave it. Wow, its really hard to explain sorry.

Yes, we had the same problem with the syringe. I would just break it up into tiny pieces, and put small amounts in his cheek, followed by a little bit of water from the syringe. It dissolves really quickly. By 4 months I just stuck it on their tongue.

I would make sure all the little pieces would "sink" in front of the opening of the syringe before putting it in his mouth. I just had gravity do its part and then I usually got 90% out in one time. If necessary I would take a little extra water, shake and then try again.

My girls got half a solutab each and i'd just stick it right into the corner of their cheek.... I could never get all the dang beads out of anything...

I found if I swished it around a bit in the water, and then between each squirt swished it around with the syringe tip pointed down, that helped a lot, it took some practice though. You can add more water too, if needed.

This is exactly what I do too. I let all the granules sink into the syringe tip! Good Luck!

Our DDs have been doing the solutabs for about 7 months now. I had a lot of problems with the syringes, but I would do what previous posts have mentioned, letting the beads sink to the end of the syringe first. My main problem was that the syringes were too big around and the girls wouldn't let me put them into their mouths so the water and meds would end up dribbling out the side of their mouths. Grrrr. So, I started actually using the "squeeze" droppers that come with vitamins/Tylenol, etc. We put the solutab in a bottle lid, added the water and then used the medicine dropper to administer the water/Prevacid. It works much better for us. We still have the problem with having to make sure the beads don't stick to the sides, but I just turn the dropper a time or two while I'm squeezing the meds toward the backs of their cheek. Hope that makes sense!

Our method works like a dream *for us* though I am sure every kid is different (only one of mine has reflux). We use a medicine spoon or a small silverware spoon! Place the tab on the spoon, and slowly drip water over it with a syringe until it's dissolved. Then carefully bring it to the baby's mouth. Jacob has a great sucking reflex and as soon as you place the end of the spoon in his mouth, he sucks the contents right off! He loves it so much that every time he sees the spoon and syringe, he kicks his feet and his whole body expresses excitement. :icon_biggrin: Hope that maybe this helps someone.

Best of luck with Prevacid- it made a world of difference for us, after about 2 weeks.

Silly question, but did the Prevacid help with the spitting at all? My son is a non-stop fountain. Just curious. I know it isn't supposed to, but one can hope!

It only helps the pain associated with the spitting up. I have probably asked you this before...are you thickening his formula with cereal? That will lessen the spit-up.

2tsp. per oz. and he is still a fountain. If I make it any thicker, I will need to serve it in a bowl with a spoon! :) The boy is an endless spitter! We go through close to 3 large boxes of cereal a week.

He gets 64tsp. a day! I think it is an insane amount of food. It sure explains why his weight is 75th %ile and his height only 10th!

    :)

We do almost a tbsp per oz for thickening. Reflux "experts" say that it should be as thick as tomato sauce (not paste!). It IS thick but it was the only thing that worked to help lessen the spit up.

We also stuck the tab directly in his cheek and then inserted his binkie-- worked every time. Prevacid works wonders for our little guy but it did take a while to work.

    Best of luck to you!

I posted a similar post not too long ago and based on advice I got there, I just started crumbling it in their mouths and sticking the bottle in right afterwards. So far, so good! ;)

We always dropped the solutabs in a bottle with an ounce or so of BM or formula. After they finished it they would get the rest of their feeding. We were never told to try a syringe . . .

Of course this won't work if your exclusively breastfeeding.

Today I just put it on their tongue and then gave them a little water in a bottle. Seemed to work and no one choked. I think I will keep trying that and see.

    Thanks guys!

I definitely saw less spit up from my two once we started prevacid.

This is what we did too and it worked out pretty good.

Definately not a silly question. I know they say that it isn't supposed to stop/slow down the spit up BUT for my ds it did. So there is hope and I hope this is the case for your little guy as well. Good luck!! I hope he gets to feeling better really quick. :hug99:
