The doctor prescribed Prevacid for my DD for reflux. It's a powder that I have to divide by 3 then dilute in water, suck it up and get it in her mouth. How the hell am I supposed to do that? I look like a druggie "cutting" my stash. LOL Anyone been there done that? Any tips?

The whole syringe deal never worked for us either...I crush the tablet into ittybitty pieces in a small tupperware jar, wet my finger in their mouth and finger it in and have them wash it down with a bottle. Does that make sense? Works like a charm everytime!

ETA: I thought you were referring to the Solutabs....I have never heard of the powder form.

Could you ask if you can switch to solutabs? We dissolve 1/2 a solutab in a tiny bowl I use to prep food with water, then use an eye dropper type syringe to administer the water. It takes 3-4 eye dropper's full to use all the water/pill in the bowl. My DS does great with it. I just put the dropper into the back right or left side of his cheek and he swallows everytime. He actually opens his mouth and waits for it now- he loves the strawberry flavor. Good luck- I hope you find something that works for you!

I never heard of having to cut it before. I wonder if anyone can give tips on that? We had the powder that we added water to. I put it in a cup and used the syringe. It was flavored (I think!) so they looked forward to it.

We also used the Solutabs, and I broke them into tiny pieces, and put them into the sides of their cheeks. I would then squirt water in their cheeks with a syringe to help them dissolve.

    Same here.

You can take the "cut" powder and put it on a piece of paper and roll the paper to act as a funnel an add that to a syringe full about 4 mls of water and then squirt into the cheek.

This is what we do. We an old dropper from their vitamins. They love it, think they are getting a treat. We put everything in a shot glass.

We use the solutabs. 1/2 tablet 2xday per baby. They started at around 2mo so we have been at it a while. We tried several techniques - first the syringe looking dropper - it looked like it had to hurt their little gums so I vetoed it after a couple of uses. We tried putting it in a small bottle with a nipple - they sucked the water out, but left behind most of the pill granuels (not their fault - the stuff just stuck to the silicone of the nipple). Then we switched to the dropper (like the kind you use with mylicon or tylenol only bigger (5mls)). It was free from our Kroger pharmacy. At first we put it in their mouths and edged it over the side of their cheeks and squeezed just a tiny little bit at a time. After a week or two we just put it in their mouths and they just suck it down. I do only put a ml or two in each time and give it to them 2-3 times so in case they really inhale and suck hard they don't get a flood all at once as it comes out a bit faster than their bottles. This may be obvious, but at first we also held them cradle style like we were giving them a bottle so that gravity helped get the liquid in the right direction. Now they can sit-up in the highchairs and I give it to them while I am making the bottles.

If you buy a dropper style thing beware of the ones that have the cap for the end attached to the dropper. The boys constantly grabbed it and yanked on it pulling the whole thing out of their mouths or tipping it the wrong way and making a mess.

I use the solutab and just cut the tablet in half and stick it in her cheek and it dissolves very quickly. I just watch her while it happens. I tried mixing it and it was a pain and left so much in the dropper. She doesn't try to spit out the pill.

Well crap why don't I have solutabs??? I got these powder packets that contain 15 mg of meds and she only needs 5 mg. So I had to dump it onto a plate and divide it into 3 equal piles with a credit card. That's what made me feel like a druggie. LOL Then I used my finger to swipe one of the piles into a medicine cup, add water and suck it up with a syringe. The syringe part isn't so bad but the powder is weird. There are these little tiny pearls that must be the delayed release meds and the rest is like koolaid.

Just curious, but what are your baby's dosages and weights? TIA

Yeah- that is what I had but my boys took 15 mg. I would talk to your dr about what the others have suggested.

That sounds like a lot of work!! My girls have been on the 15mg solutabs (1 tab once a day) since they were about 9lbs, and my pedi hasn't changed the dose since, and it still seems to be just as effective.

We were on the prevacid (powder) when the boys were around 6 weeks. We used half the packet instead of thirds. What I did was figure out how many tsp. each dose was and I dumped ALL the packets into a tupperware and every night just got the right about of tsp (For us I think it was 2 and a half tsp.) That was a lot easier then doing it each night. We also used a dropper and used to use a syringe. When we used the syringe, my husband would let them suck on his CLEAN finger while I squirted it in the side of their mouth. The medicine dropper works a lot better and faster, they just sucked on the dropper.

    Hope that helps.

We started at 10 & 11lbs with a 15mg solutab per day (1/2 tab 2xday). The Dr. said the dosage wouldn't be increased as 30mg/day is an adult doseage. I think we started on the high side as one of my kiddos had pretty much completely quit eating (he was literally down to about 10oz total per day) and that was with some coaxing.

We do the solutabs too - we do 1/2 tablet 2xday.

I cut the tablet into two parts (which often ends up in piles of powder) - then I put the tablet and powder directly into the dry syringe with no water. Then I suck up the water, let it dissolve and then squirt it into her mouth. Then I repeat until all the granules are gone.

Yes, it is a pain, but I think it works better than dissolving and sucking it up and then trying to get all the granules too!

Thank you! That is a great idea. I also decided that I'll do slightly more than a 3rd of the powder, that way if she spits out some I don't have to worry so much. They gave me 30 packets but she only needs 1/3 so I have lots extra to mess around with.

We use 1/2 of the 15mg pill per day. He was about 8 lbs when we started? My pedi was out of town and another gave me the prescription. When she came back she said she always starts her patients off with 15 mg per day- but if the 7.5 mg was working to leave it alone. I asked at what weight he'd move up to a whole pill and she said it wasn't dictated by weight- but more by symptoms at that point. (maybe because he could have taken more for his weight at that time??)

We have solutabs too but it sounds like the powder does the same thing, gets stuck in the syringe when the water is done. This is what I do and it works like a charm.

I add the full 6ml of water (they say to start with 4ml and then add 2ml to get the rest of the granules) and I bought one of these at Walgreens and put the solutab in shake it and my DD drinks it all and it is all gone no more mess and squirting it in the mouth. She can even hold it herself as miss independent likes to do LOL
