for the first time i gave my child a half a bagel to gnaw on yesterday. my friends told me to (LOL) and i was so nervous the whole time! could i give the kids things like pretzel rods and bagels as a snack
Do you mean like the little hard pretzels sticks? That is what I give mine, or the pretzel twists. I have given them soft pretzels too and just give them a piece at a time.
I do pretzels for the twins but not for my youngest yet. For the harder things I wait until they have a couple molars in the back. But I'm a nervous wreck on stuff they could choke on.
yes they are the pretzel rods. the long hard sticks. and as for the bagels, i gave them half each. i was very nervous; my friends said it was OK, lol. they stuck the whole thing in their mouths (LOL) and chewed. no choking (THANK GOD hahaaha) but they loved them.
I've never given my guys bagels as a snack, because I like the super tough chewy ones that would be hard for them to masticate. I'd give them the softer bagels in bits (with cream cheese or another topping) if I could bring myself to buy them. I have given them incredibly hard, stale bagels as a teething aid and they LOVED them!! I haven't given hard pretzels (just because I never buy them), but I know Jack would like them because he likes anything crunchy. I have given them homemade soft pretzels though.
ok so dont give them bagels or pretzel rods yet? (Seems to be the consensus?) LOL i bought the frozen mini bagels. my friend said she lets her daughter chew on them when they are frozen for when shes teething. the pretzel rods are tough; never done it before but i felt like i was the only paranoid mom, lol.
The pretzel rods are tough for me! lol I know a friend who broke her tooth biting one, so I've kept them away from my girls and the whole choking hazard thing. I don't know what I would do if they would choke, so I tend to be careful about what I give them. Something soft like a mini-bagel I think is okay. We break them into half and then half again so they have four pieces with cream cheese and they do great with those.
Besides for mini bagels, you can look for the 100 calorie bagels, i think thomas makes them, they are much thinner than regular bagels. As far as pretzel rods, I wouldn't worry too much, they probably can't break off a piece of the pretzel and will just suck/gnaw on it, i think it's fine as long as you watch them.
Mine have had pretzels before but not the big rods. Just because I haven't bought them. They have had the honey wheat twisted sticks before though and done fine with them.
I haven't given the smaller pretzel sticks because i'm paranoid, but I'm sure my two would do fine with it, they have all their teeth. Liam still likes to shove whole things in his mouth though so I have a feeling he'd shove it in and choke or scratch his throat with it....hence the reason I haven't tried it. I've given them a bagel the other day, it was sliced in "half" but it was more like 1/3 - 2/3. So I sliced the bigger half again, so it was in thirds completely. Then i slathered some whipped cream cheese on it, and cut the slices in half again. They loved them! But boy was it a mess!
With bagels I would cut them into smaller pieces. I used to cover them with butter or cream cheese or sometimes toasted with cheese on top of it. I have not done pretzel rods just because I have not bought them. I've tried the thin pretzels with the kids and they weren't fond of them
I get the whole wheat mini bagels - think Thomas is the brand. They are really soft. I won't do the pretzel rods yet. Mine shove big bites and they don't dissolve quickly.
