Well, my six year olds are no help. I just asked them and they both said, "I don't know!"

I'll say silly books (like Captain Underpants), board games (Apples to Apples, Clue Jr), sports equipment like bats and balls, a scooter, gift cards to Target or Toys R Us, Playstation/Wii games, CDs, movies, light sabers, Nerf guns, sketch pads with colored pencils, Imaginext or Playmobil sets, Shrinky Dinks.

    I second this...

Another thought is a gift card to toys r us or my sons favorite is Target!

    Anything Pokemon, Bakugan, Bionicle
Nerf has these nice "guns" that shoot Nerf darts
A card game -- like Blink, or UNO,something easy to learn
Legos kits (star wars, pirates of the caribean, etc.) Might have intricate pieces, consider if the child gets frustrated or not.
stuff to draw/write with (sketch pads, notebooks)
gift cards!!! (They love going and choosing their present. It gives them a feeling of such POWER.)

Another vote for Lego's :) My guys got a 3-1 small kit for their 6th Birthday and that is what started the Lego craze at our home. They like the smaller kits they can build like the 3-1 kits, and Lego racers. With the Lego racers if you look on container you can combine two to make one bigger truck too. But, you have to be sure you have the correct matching kits. My guys also still like Webkinz.

Tech Decks...my 6 yr old just got one and LOVES it. It's a little skate board. It's pretty cute. They play with them with their hands and fingers. Of course Legos, Superhero toys (Spiderman, Superman, etc.), and Star Wars stuff is always good, too!

    Legos!!

I would steer clear of superhero stuff unless you know they are into that stuff. My kids aren't into superhero/starwars/ commerciallized stuff like that.
    webkinz
    balls of all sports
apples to apples is fun for the whole family!
    art supplies
