Hello, I am new to the forum... My wife and I just found out she is pregnant with a set of identical twins (9 weeks). We have twin 5 and a half year old girls (fraternal). Anyone out there in a similar situation? Any info/advice re: identical twins would be much appreciated.

    Best,

    Eli :)

Congratulations! At least you know what you are in for and what to expect! How do you know so early on that you are having identical twins? Welcome to TS!

Doc says 1 gestational sac 2 amniotic sacs and 1 placenta (or egg?)

Well, since she is only 9 weeks, did they tell by the placenta that the babies were ID? Or are they MOMO twins? I have MOMO twins....

Congrats! How exciting! There are a few moms out here in TS-land that have two sets (and a couple in your situation with one set of frats and one set of idents). Welcome!

Congratulations on your twins! How exciting to get a second set. :)

Identicals require a little more monitoring than fraternals because there is the 10-15% chance of blood vessels getting connected in the placenta (TTTS). After 16 weeks or so, you should be getting an ultrasound a minimum of every two weeks to watch for TTTS. You have an 85-90% chance of not having to deal with it but there are many moms on here with TTTS survivors, including myself. The most important thing is just to make sure your doctor knows the symptoms and is monitoring the babies enough. A lot of TTTS deaths happen due to doctors not recognizing the condition until it is too late.

Congrats again and welcome to TS!

I'm also surprised that they can tell so early on that they are id. I guess they must be clearly sharing a sac. Congrats. Healy'sBaker'sDozen over in triplets and large families has three sets of twins. I believe two sets are id. and the other set is frat. so it's possible, just very rare. I'm sure your girls are going to be excited. Hope you have a very healthy smooth pg and delivery!

oh wow! Congratulations - you'll find lots of good info on this website, but the deal with ID twins is, like a pp mentioned, the add'l monitoring that's recommended. I have ID boys - I was going to a peri exclusively from 6w on and getting u/s constantly, it seemed. Good luck and welcome!

Congrats on a second set! How exciting!

My boys are ID, too, and we knew from the very beginning. Only one placenta. It's too early for them to fuse and "look" like one at that point.

Congratulations! We're in the same boat, and our first set (boys) are just a few months younger than yours. We think this second set are fraternal but should know better in a few weeks.... --P.
