Preemies stop formula at 12 months actual or adjusted?

    Hi All,
My twins were 7 weeks early, but they are growing very well. Its hard to tell by looking at them that they were preemies, though they are behind developmentally. My pediatrician says they are fine to stop formula at 12 months actual, but I am nervous about it. How many of you were directed to continue formula until 12 months adjusted? Obviously I'd love to save the money by switching, but their health is so much more important!

    Thanks!

My girls were 6 weeks early and our pedi had us start transitioning them to whole milk after their 12 month wbv, which was a week after their birthday.

My boys were preemies, they were 8 weeks early, and we switched to milk at 12 months actual and did not wait for adjusted. They were ready to be done with formula and go to milk. I think all babies are different and go with what you are most comfortable with.

My girls were 7.5 weeks early, and we had them on whole milk by 12 months actual age. The pediatrician had agreed with it since they were growing fine. I agree--do what makes you feel most comfortable.

Some pediatricians actually say you can switch at 10 months, so honestly I don't think it will make much of a difference as long as they're eating a balanced diet. But in the end, it's really up to you. We decided to wait for 12 months either way (our pediatrician was one of the above), as they only stopped baby food at 11.5 months.

We were given the go-ahead to transition to whole milk at their 12 month (actual) WBV, but since we had so much formula on hand, they actually got formula until 14 months which would have been about 12 months adjusted. How's that for an answer that didn't really answer your question? :)

Mine were born 10 weeks early, and Dr. told us we can switch to milk at 12 months (acutal age) I was afraid to but dr. gave the OK.....funny the word PREEMIE, never comes up when we are at the Drs.

mine were 4 weeks early and we just transitioned to milk only and no formula at all at 17 mo.....we started slowly doing 1 bottle at a time replaced by a sippy of milk at about 14 mo....I wasn't ready, they probably would have been fine either way, up to you as a mom I think....

My 33 weekers started milk a week after their 1st bday b/c that was their 1 yr check up. My boys are in the 3rd % for weight so we had to add Carnation Instant Breakfast to help them get extra calories, but only did that until they were 15 months.

I will have to agree with everyone else. My girls were seven weeks early and we started whole milk at their one year birthday.

Thanks everyone! It sounds like it is super common to switch at 12 months actual. My dr. never seems to adjust much for their gestational age, so I'm always wondering if she's even thinking about it. I'm sure she *is*, since she is a very careful doctor overall and was extremely conservative when they were in the nicu...but you know how moms worry. :)

I'll be switching slowly, so they'll get at least some formula for a while yet anyways. I feel a lot better after hearing your stories, so thank you so much for putting my mind at ease!

My pedi told me to wait until 12 months adjusted because they weren't doing well on solids yet.
