I was just wondering if people used preemie clothes for babies that were 5-6lbs or did the newborn outfits and onesies fit ok? Thanks.

My DD was 6 pounds 15 ounces at birth and NB sizes were HUGE on her. She could have easily worn preemie for a couple of weeks.

when my dd was born, she was 8 lbs and the 0 - 3 mos were swimming on her. i expect to have the boys in preemies for a while, since they'll be somewhere between 6 - 7 lbs.

Ours wore preemie clothes for quite awhile. Probably until they were at least 8 pounds or so.

In another post, someone told me about a "just born" size that Gerber (and maybe other companies?) make. You might want to check into that!

Ours wore preemie until they were well over 2 months old and then NB until they were 3 months

My boys were 5lb 8oz and 6lb 10oz (4 weeks early) and they wore premie clothes for the first month at least.

Mine were in preemie clothes until about 8lbs. and even then newborn was a little big on them. At 5-6 lbs. you are going to more than likely need preemie clothes. Walmart has some and so does Burlington.

I am planning on buying some things at Gap and they have that "newborn" size that fits "up to 7lbs". They also have preemie clothes that fit "up to 5 lbs."

I am going to buy the up to 7 lb stuff and I am going to skip preemie; I figure if they are born soon, I will have plenty of time to buy preemie clothes if needed before they are out of the NICU.

Thank you everyone for all of the information. I guess I should go buy some preemie clothes.

My babies are in preemie clothes. Newborn is to big (until you wash them once or twice) but the Gerber Just Born fits great (don't know why). Another thing that fits great are those shirts that snap to the size and don't have the bottom snap. One of my girls weigh 5lbs. 11oz. and she's still in preemie and the other babie is 4lbs. 13oz.

My boys were 6 lbs at birth and the newborn stuff was huge. I bought a bunch of gerber onsies in the just born size and those they were able to wear until almost 2 months. I don't know where you live but if it is starting to get cool I would say get a bunch of premie sleepers you will probably be able to use them for a while.

I thought I had a few outfits premie sized, but after coming home with a 4lb 11oz girl and a 5lb 1oz boy, I relized that I didn't have any. And I needed them bad. Premie are very hard to find, but I would definately recommend getting some. Every company has variations and even the same company has variations on the same size. All the NB stuff i have is huge.

walmart tends to have a good selection of preemie clothes, DD was wearing preemie for first few weeks, we also put socks over the footed NB pjs which really helped them fit better for the first few weeks!
buy a few for each baby, tape the receipts to the outfits, then wait until you know if you are going to need them or not you can always return them if they end up bigger than you think! :icon_biggrin:

My D was never in the NICU and could have easily fit preemie clothes, so I'd have some on hand just in case...

I don't know - but I've found that Carters clothes run a little bit bigger, and Gerber brand stuff runs a bit small. I also think that Gap runs a bit smaller too, but more in the middle. All the other stuff is kind of in the middle.

So, maybe that helps - or not...

Yes, us too. We used preemie clothes and gerber's "just born" onesies.

Ours were never in preemie clothes. WE had some outfits that were 'up to 7lbs' which they wore for a few months.

My boys were 6 pounds 1 ounce and 6 pounds 9 ounces. Widthwise, even NB was big... HOWEVER, they were 19.75" long so the preemie clothes didn't fit for length and most of what I was given were sleep & plays so there was no way they could wear them. By one month of age, they fit best in 0-3 and have been pretty close to the month sizes as marked ever since.

So, I wouldn't buy too much in the tiny sizes and leave the tags on/keep receipts until you know for certain how big they are.

My twins are living in the "Just Born" onesies that Gerber makes. All of their other clothes are way too big, and I had pretty big babies! Even Drew who I'm sure is 7 pounds by now still easily fits into the onesies.

We used preemie clothes for around 2 months and mine were both 6 lbs. Gymboree's up to 7 lbs works well, but Walmart has the biggest selection for the cheapest price. IMO you'll want to pick up a couple of cute going-out outfits in preemie.

My grandsons were preemies and one came home at just over four pounds and the other five pounds on the nose. Anything but preemies swallowed them. They stayed in preemies long enough to justify the purchase - it was the 0-3 months that we didn't really need. They stayed in those for just a couple of weeks and went straight to 3-6 month size and then in the blink of an eye in 6-9 months. They are seven months old and the 6-9 month are getting tight and short. These boys are growing like we have put fertilizer on them. You'd never know they were preemies or ever behind in size. I keep pictures in my brag book just to remind us how tiny they were when they were born.
