I just wondered how long (if at all) your babies were in preemie clothes. I was sorting through all the stuff we got at our showers, and only have one girl preemie outfit. I'm assuming I need to go out and buy a few things, but just wanted to be sure not to buy too much!

Also, was there a difference between your boy and girl (if you had b/g twins) in the rate they grew out of clothes?

    TIA!

I wouldn't bother buying any preemie clothes at all. You never know when you're going to deliver and how big the babies will be - you could deliver a couple 7-pounders at 38 wks, and the preemie clothes wouldn't even fit!

My DS was still under 5 lbs when he came home from the NICU. Even then, 0-3 month or newborn size baby clothes fit him pretty well. A bit big, but not ridiculous or anything, just room to grow. My mom bought him a couple preemie size outfits, and he outgrew them within a couple weeks.

So if your babies are premature enough to fit into preemie clothes, they'll probably still be in the NICU anyway, and won't need clothes. (When mine were in the NICU, we just let them wear hospital shirts, or just diapers and swaddling blankets.) You can always buy a couple preemie things then if it comes up.

I wouldn't even buy too many newborn size things, since they'll outgrow them in weeks at the most. 0-3 and 3-6 mo. are a better bet.

I haven't noticed much difference between DS & DD outgrowing clothes...they're both equally good at it! :D

Good luck to you & your twins! :)

it won't hurt to have a few in season sleepers on hand, just keep the receipts in case you don't end up needing them. my mom was convinced my babies were going to come at 36 weeks and be small so she bought a bunch of preemie sleepers at walmart. she went ahead and washed them so I couldn't return them. my babies ended up being born at 39 weeks and were both too big for preemie. newborn was perfect for DS but DD was a little to small, we just put socks on her feet over the footed sleepers and it worked great.
now at almost 6mo DS wears 6mo, he definitely grew faster and DD wears 3-6 depending on the outfit.

before the boys were born everyone told me I didnt need to buy peemie clothes b/c you never know. Well I didnt and I ended up needing them b/c the boys were only 3 and 4 lbs. I bought a few things i got on sale for under 3.00 an outfit at sears we were out of them in 4 weeks...... We didnt need alot b/c I just washed everynight anyway and we didnt go anywhere for the first month so no one really saw them except my parents and dh... they DID fit into a few newborn but not to much.

I would buy at the very least 1 outfit a piece or sleeper and if you dont need it take it back.

I'd have a couple on hand.... our guys were still 5 lbs (which is pretty good) but still needed preemie outfits or they'd be swimming in the newborn stuff (which made me nervous as the necklines came close to their little mouths when sleeping). And I say you need at least 4 because then what do you do when they spit up or pee through the one outfit? Definitely keep tags on till they're born, but have them ready! Good luck! :)

My girls were born at 34 weeks and were 3lb 9oz and 3lbs 10oz. I had 2 preemie outfits (from my shower), but after they were born, friends got a couple more and a package of preemie onesies. In all we had about 6 outfits (3 for each girl) and 10 onesies. They were in preemie clothes for a month so it was definitely worth it (2 weeks in the hospital, 2 weeks at home). As soon as they could wear newborn stuff without it being ridiculous, I was so happy to not have to do laundry so much :)

I think the idea of buying a couple of things and keeping the receipts is a great one. You'll have time to wash it if you need it. GL and hopefully you won't need any preemie clothes! -Leighann

Everyone told my daughter not to buy preemie clothes either for her twins. Her girls were 36 weekers and 5 lb apiece. And we had to scramble to find preemie clothes because even the newborn size was huge. Gerber newborn onsies are great. They run small and fit the girls nicely. I would buy a few things and save the receipts and tags. It is a lot better than scrambling to find them something once they are born. And her girls wore a lot of the preemie things til they were 3-4 months
E-bay is a great source for preemie stuff as well. I bought the girls several sleepers on ebay( especially helpful if you live in a smaller community that may not offer much in preemie sizes).

  8. Mine were 36 weekers and I had a 5 pack of onsies and 2 sleepers for each. They are kinda expensive, so I just washed them a LOT. They were in preemie outfits for 2 or 3 weeks, but in newborn size FOREVER...I would even consider (if they are a reasonable weight) getting a lot of newborn size and just letting them use that even though it fits a little big.

My guys were 6,2 and 6.9 at 37.5 weeks - too big for preemie clothes, a little to small for newborn clothes. They just wore clothes that were a bit too big at first. I did so much laundry that they didn't need much - I think we had 4 of those nightie things, 2 sleepers, 2 onesies and 2 pairs of little pants with feet.

DS (the boy half of my b/g twins) is still in preemie clothes at 2 months. He's over 6 pounds but he is long and lean so even some of the wider preemie clothes are still too big. I wouldn't buy many until after you deliver. If you do buy some now keep the reciepts and tags on the clothes. Its kind of a toss up. I didn't buy any while I was prego because I thought I would carry to term and not need them but thats not how things panned out.

Our guys were 10 wks premature. We had to go out an buy preemie clothing. BUt only a couple items. They really outgrow these very fast.

My girls were born at 31 weeks, 3lb4oz and 3lb8oz, and were in preemie clothing until they were about 2 months old. I had about 10 preemie outfits total, but that's because we got quite a few at my shower and I had a few handed down to me.

Walmart has cute, cheap preemie clothing.

All babies are different but the general concensus is that they grow fast. Use your best judgement. Good luck with your twins.

I wouldn't buy any either. My girls were 5 lbs 13 and 5 14 and they fit in them but only for a few days. They could have worn newborn stuff a little big and they'd have been fine. If you need to get them later go ahead. I have some stuff i never used - a pack of premie t shirts in case the onsies irritated the umbilical cord - but the onesies were fine. Good luck!

I would definitely get preemie clothes. Mine were just under and just over 6 pounds, and they were swimming in 0-3 month stuff for at least 6 weeks. It even took awhile before the NB size worked. Socks wouldn't even stay on their feet they were so small. Now at 4 months they are still in 0-3 months stuff. I didn't have a single preemie outfit before they were born, and we ended up going to get some things after they were born. We also found that the Gerber brand 0-3 months runs really small....so that worked from the beginning. Good luck.

My daughter was born at 5lbs. 2oz. and my son at 6lbs. 6oz. and they both wore preemie clothes for close to a month. In fact my daughter still wears some preemie things. Elizabeth is now 8lbs. and Thomas is 9lbs. 6oz.

I found that Wal-Mart sells a lot of preemie things really cheap. We got Elizabeth 4 dresses for $2 each. Great deals.

My DS was 6lb6oz and my DD was 6lb3oz. I found NEWBORN clothes fit fine but 0-3months were huge for about a month and then they could wear 0-3. I would probably buy NEWBORN over PREEMIE since even if you have bigger twins they will more likely fit in those vs preemie.

Same here, my girls were born at 34wks 3lb 13oz and 4lb 1oz. They were in preemies just over 2months, we had the worst time finding preemie outfits! It seems like as soon as they grew out of them, the malls and WalMart started stocking them and this was just this past December they were born. I think 10 outfits sounds good, keep tags and trade size up if not needed! My girls were in newborn forever. They still fit in 0-3 when they were 4m, and 3-6 when they were 7m, so all of there clothes have lasted a real long time. (By the way, they are in great health and charting very well- they are just smaller framed-so you just never know)-- but I always just exchanged for a bigger size if I didn't use some outfits---OR, keep them- someone is always having a baby. I just re-gift! :rotflmbo:

We went to 38 weeks and our guys were 6.6 and 5.2 so we didn't need preemie clothes long. They gained weight pretty fast! :)

We were in premies for almost a month. But then they shot right out of them into 0-3. We were barely in newborns. We never left the house then so I didn't mind seeming them in the same outfits alot! I only bought sleepers!

My boys were big at birth (see siggie) but still wore preemie clothes. The Just Born sized onesies by Gerber & the Newborn sized onesies by Carters/Just One Year fit them perfectly, whereas they SWAM in 0-3 (still are too big at 3 wks old). We use a lot of 'sleep sacks' around the house & just roll up the sleeves, but also have some preemie sized sleepers to venture out in. Walmart has them relatively cheap (under $7/sleeper), so I think we maybe have 4 or so. They're still wearing SOME of them, but are now mainly into newborn. Even still...a lot of NEWBORN things are too big for my guys! I can't wait til we fit into our 0-3 since I have a LOT of summer clothes that size & we don't even look that close to wearing them yet!!!

I bought a lot of preemie clothes while pregnant, especially since I had a lot of issues with PTL & thought our boys would not only be early, but small (they measured small via u/s). I kept tags on most everything & was able to return it all easily (to Walmart, I'm unsure of other places but know you can get preemie at Babies R Us too). I also had to return ALL my Preemie diapers, even though the Newborns were a bit too big! Just keep receipts!

    GL to you!

Definitely didn't need them. Got one boy outfit from a friend (which she found on sale) ... he never really fit in it!

However, I do have a lot of Petit Bateau which fits rather small so that had a better fit than some Gap stuff (which is generally wider).

We had a preemie gown, preemie sleeper and a 5 pack of onesies He wore them for 3-4 weeks, except for the sleeper and gown he didn't wear them after 10 days in NICU.

The NICU had outfits and sent us home with stuff and told us to 'pay it forward' and just send it back when we were done with it. We (well my Mom) bought a few girly outfits as most of the clothes from the NICU were unisex and she was so proud to have a new gd she spoiled her a bit. They grew out of them so fast so I wouldn't go crazy buying stuff, as you don't know how big or when yours are going to arrive. Save the reciept and don't wash anything until you need to.

my girls were born at 34w 6d... we were in the hospital for 8 days because of me, but they were in my room so I dressed them. They were 5lbs 9oz & 5lbs 11oz... good size for so early. They wore preemie sleepers for about a month... short sleeved shorts outfits & the dresses still fit them. They were almost 8lbs when they outgrew the length. Now they are almost 9lbs... the NB stuff still is big around but they are getting two long for them as well... they wore NB for about almost 2 months... the NB says up to 7 & 8lbs depending on the size... but they still fit!

I would do what the others suggest buy a few & keep the receipts... I would buy 1 or 2 outifts & 2 or 3 sleepers... we had MUCH more, but if you wash laundry once a day thats all you really need!

Side note... my singleton son was 6lbs 15oz & wore preemie stuff for almost 2 weeks.

Our boys were born at 31 weeks. I bought preemie clothes before they left the NICU. The ones I liked were the t-shirt onesie type that snapped. Worked great around all the wires and stuff. Even after they came home at 5 weeks they wore their preemie clothes for a month and were around 5lbs. But on the other hand they are 6 months almost 16lbs and can still squeeze into 3 month sleepers.

Walmart sells preemie sizes. You can always wait until the time comes. Best to put the money towards what they will need instead of what they might need.
