Preemie Clothes- How Many Sets

On one of my other boards, we did a Baby Swap. My partner bought me the most darling outfits from Carter's for the girls. I am so touched by her generosity, but the clothes look so small! How long were your kids in preemie?

With DD, she was 7.5 lbs and 21 inches, and she was still in Carter's NB for a month, even though according to the sizing, she was already too big for it at birth.

So I am hoping that the sizing is generous, but I am just so scared that the girls will not be able to wear the sets. Of course, I would be even more thrilled with big healthy babies who were too big for preemie, but you know what I mean! ;)

I didn't have any sets. In my opinion, if you need some, have someone available to run out and get some IF you need them. My two were in newborn clothes & never wore any preemie. They were born at 7.5 lbs each. IF you do shop ahead of time, keep the tags on. Wash only what you use.

Hmmm, I'm wondering if I should switch them for NB. I did not get a gift receipt, but I am pretty sure she got them at BRU......

It wouldn't hurt to hang on to them just in case. Perhap the exchange can be done IF you don't need them. I mean, I'd hate to return something and then end up needing it, KWIM?

Yeah, I know. The girls could be here in 6 weeks, 8 weeks....... 12 weeks. It's too soon to tell and I am a planner!

And you know that I'm going to need whatever I don't have- so if I switch them, we will need preemie, and if I don't, we will need bigger clothes. ;)

It will sort itself out in the end. I am just so excited and happy for my gift that I want it to get used!!!

Don't do what I did.. forget about some.. stick it away and then not find it until they are too big to wear that cute, adorable, matching outfit.

I was wondering the same thing!!! My mom got the cutest matching outfits for them to wear home from the hospital! They are NB, but I have a gift recipt just incase they need to be 'downsized'. I didn't buy any premie outfits, but I had a friend who had a premie about a year ago and she gave me all of her clothes, some look way bigger than others though! The only thing is they are all girl clothes and I'm having a boy & a girl, there are a few neutral things, so I guess we shall see. GL!!!

I had 4 preemie outfits each that my boys wore for 2 weeks. They were born at 33 weeks and were 3lbs 3oz and 3lbs 11oz. They couldn't even fit in them until they hit 4lbs, but they ran out on the length very quickly. Here is my 2 cents. Hold onto them until you are 34 weeks along. After that, get NB. Mark a calendar to remind you to return them. If I write it down, I tend to remember better.

I bought a few preemie outfits myself since they're a bit difficult to find around here. Then I received two more outfits at my shower. I have a weeks worth for each at this point, I think. Trouble is, doc thinks even delivering at 36 weeks, our babies will be between 6-6.5 pounds! Yikes!

My daughter was 6lbs 9 oz at 38 weeks so I figured even if I do go to 38 weeks, They could fit into preemie. I just bought "bring them home" outfits in preemie size. I didn't want to buy too much and jinx myself.

My son was born 7lb 9oz and was 21" and we didn't buy any premmie clothes but he was too small in the new born outfit. but after month he wasn't look small inside the clothes. So I am planing to by couple of premmie for twins just to bring them home and use for couple of weeks.

I got one set of preemie outfits at my shower. I've held on to them just in case we need them to bring them home in. Otherwise, everything is NB and up. There's a BRU right across from our hospital so I can always send my Mom to pick up extras if needed.

I had some preemie onesies, and that is about all. They wore them for about 2 weeks maybe? I kept them in onesies with gowns over the top almost 24/7 for the first month or so. My two were born at 7lbs and 5.5lbs.

My boys were born at 38 weeks exactly. They were born weighing 6lbs 13oz and 6lbs 3 oz. I think Anthony went home weighing 5lbs 9 oz and Nicholas went home weighing 6lbs 3 oz. Something like that. So remember-they can and most likely will, lose weight before going home.

I had a few preemie outfits-maybe 4? We ended up going out and getting some more. We didn't spend a fortune, but had some extra on hand. Anthony is still small(at 21 lbs and 17 months and 29 inches-he STILL can fit into 6-9 month pants!). He was probably in preemie for a good month-or at least fit comfortably in it.

I would keep it. Keep the tags on it if you are unsure-you can always exchange them later if you find you do not need them.

This just depends when your babies are born. Ours were 6 weeks early and I had about 4 outfits for each baby. Also, I left them in hospital clothes while they were in the NICU. The clothes get dirty and pooped on and everything, I didn't want to have to buy big preemie wardrobes for them when the hospital had clothes there. By their due date, one was in newborn clothes and the other took a couple more weeks before being able to wear NB size.

My advice: I'd buy a few outfits and keep the receipts, don't wash them until the babies are born. Then you'll have a better idea of what sizes you need, and you can exchange them for bigger clothes if you don't need preemie ones.

My plan is that I'm buying bigger sizes now 0-3/ 3-6 and a couple newborns. Then as I get closer (most stores will take returns for 30/60/90 days and still give $ back) I'll go buy a few preemie's each and keep tags and reciepts that way I can return them if they dont get used.

We didn't have any preemie clothes for our 5.6 and 5.13 lb babies which I'm glad about. The BEST thing that we received was gowns which are awesome at night when you're half asleep and changing babies. Mine still barely fit theirs and they're over 4 months and the smaller baby is now WAY bigger than his brother. Also love the zip up pajamas! even if they are a bit bigger than the babies, they will SOON fit those clothes.

Mine were 6-2 and 6-9 so we never needed preemie clothes. Their newborn sleepers were a little big at first, but they fit fine within weeks.

You know everyone is different. My granddaughters were 37 weekers and weighed 5 pound each. They wore preemie stuff for like 2 months maybe a little longer. Their baby brother was a 42 weeker and weighed 8 lb 4 oz. We had to go out and buy preemie stuff for him so he would have something to wear that fit. He was probably in preemie for 4 weeks. Most people would say he shouldnt have fit in a newborn much less a preemie.
Personally, I would get 2-4 preemie outfits each to have on hand. Dont wash or remove tags til babies come and you see what fits. The other thing is to check ebay. That is where I got my granddaughters' preemie stuff. You dont obviously have the return option but I got the clothes for next to nothing.

I had 5 pounders at almost 37 weeks and they were in preemie and newborn until last month"2 months" now they've been in 0-3 months for 2 weeks now needing 3-6 months. So u might trade 1/2 for newborn and keep some preemies.

Well, as a mini-update, I ended up switching the sets for the exact same sets in size NB.

Preemie varies from brand to brand. I know at Gymboree, preemie is up to 7 lbs...... but these sets were Carter's and the preemie was up to 5 lbs and up to 17 inches, and they looked so tiny compared to the same item in NB size.

I thought that if I had two 5 lbers.... the outfits might only fit for a couple of weeks...and I'd like to get more use out of them because they are SUCH cute sets. One set had a top and pants and the other set had a long sleeved top, short sleeved top, pants, and romper. And there were two of each set.

NB is 5-8 lbs and up to 21 inches, so that gives us plenty of room to grow and plenty of use. I was so excited to find the exact same sets.
