Well I am going to start the girls on potty training here soon. They are 15 months and we are getting them potty chairs and underwears for Christmas. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips for girls I could use. I have 2 boys so I have never trained a girl before.

I open my book "Toddler 411" -- it says average potty trained for girls at 35 months and boys at 39 months.

This is one of our pet peeves. Daycare should NOT force toddlers to toliet train before they are ready. Unfortuantely, some centers have those guidelines because the older classrooms have fewer teachers (and hence, not enough free hands to change diapers all day).

Remember: Toliet training is a developmental milestone. If a child isn't ready, don't push it. And, don't let your daycare center or preschool dictate this change.

There is nothing wrong with your child. He/She just needs a little more time to figure it out. Until then, he/she can be the big fish in the younger classroom.

**Toliet training is NOT considered "delayed until a child is FOUR years old.**

Tip on ready for the milestone. There are 2 criteria to be successful:

    1. Your child must be clued into the urge to go, not clued in that she/he has already gone.

    2. Your child must want to be clean.

Very interesting. The child psychologist I love says do it between ages 18-24 months.

    1. I believe the child can learn the urge to go by seeing and feeling that they have already gone.

    2. Some children would never care if they are clean or not.

I believe in doing it when YOU are ready to try. It's OK to stop and completely let it go for a month or two and then try again. I believe in lots of positive reinforcement, and not punishing for accidents.

My way of doing it is to feed them lots of salty food and giving them lots to drink, letting them be bottomless to figure it out. Make it a fun couple of days. Don't get discouraged, if they aren't ready when you try, wait and try again a little later. But keep talking about it and try anytime you want.

Toddler 411 book says it ONLY take ONE day to train them! If you follow the guideline per above information to be successful.

My girls (3yo) simply were NOT ready until very recently. And still they are struggling with poo (they've always struggled with poo, chronic constipation, so I'm not surprised.)

It depends on the child. My nephew trained himself basically at 20 months. But this is the exception, IME, not the rule. Give it a try and see if it works, introduce the potty chairs and have them sit several times a day. But unless they are ready they won't train for some time.

Good luck! But don't be upset if it takes a while. And don't let other people pressure you into pressuring your kids. They'll do it in their own time.

My oldest pretty much trained herself at about 22 months, so I don't have any tips for you, but wanted to wish you luck. It took about a month for her, but she did it on her schedule. We just followed her lead when she was ready.

I PT'd my oldest when she was 32 months old, I was teaching then and wanted to do it on summer break. We did it in June and I put underwear and dresses on her, no pull ups here. We sat on the potty every 30 min. and had a little potty in the family room for her to use too. She had a lot of accidents the first day. By the 3rd day she was dry though! And was dry from then on. Good luck!
