Potty training outside the home

My 2 1/2 year old twins do great at potty training while we are home (well popping is still an issue) but when we go out somewhere they aren't really getting it. I am reluctant to take them places because I don't want to put them in diapers but I don't want to always deal with accidents when we are out. They need to learn that they can go potty other places though also. What do I do??????????

Until I felt confident in their ability to use the toilet outside the house, I put my boys in Pull-Ups when we left the house. When we reached our destination, I showed them where the potty was and told them that this is where we go potty, not in our underpants (I call Pull-Ups "underpants," too). Even though they are completely day trained, I still do this wherever we go. Of course, I always make them at least sit on the potty before we go anywhere. And I keep a training potty in the car, just in case.

At 4, I have one child who will still hold it while we are out of the house  But when I was potty training them, we would bring a little potty with us. My DD started using public potties right after she turned 3 and my DS is still in the "avoiding them like the plague phase."

Do you think it would help if I put them in underwear with maybe the plastic trainers over them?

I go and have them hit the bathroom when we hit a store and when we go out. :( Sometimes I will ask, but most of the time I just tell them to go. Dunno.. I try and make them succesful.

I actually did underwear with pull ups over them. Never had an accident;)

We just went for the gold and went out! I also had an infant when they were trained(well, she just turned a year).

Before we left the house-they went to the bathroom. When we got to our destination, they went pee on the portable toilet I brought with me. It also doubles as a cover to the larger seats, so I would still strap it onto the stroller(foldable and comes with a bag) and bring in with me. Once we left the store/restaurant(if on my own), we would get to the car and they would pee again before heading home.

Never once have we had an accident out in public. :) I say-go for it! Oh-and we never used pull ups, so for us, that wasn't an option.

Like some other posters mentioned, we would bring our little potty with us. It worked out well that way.
