My son is almost 18mths old and I thought I would start to introduce the potty to him. I am wondering for those that have trained boys did you teach them to stand at the big potty, sit on the big or little potty, or did you do something else? I am not sure how to train him. So just wondering what others have done and if it worked or if you had to change the way you started.

    Thank you

We started with sitting, then they started standing on their own--probably after seeing daddy do it a few times.

We are training sitting and I remind them to point down. If adult males struggle with aim, I can't imagine what a mess a toddler would make  Oh, and Daddy sits so they won't know about standing until they are older.

I much prefer it -- no miss-messes or seat position fights. I've asked before and he said that this was how he was raised. Apparently, DH's dad (who was raised by a single mother) was a sitter as well and he and DH's mother decided not teach their boys to stand.

When I potty trained my now 3 yr old, I started with sitting, but he didn't get it until he could stand. (I tried sitting for a week, then gave in to standing). He was great once allowed to stand. Now, my just turned 18 month olds I'm starting with sitting. Alex does great, but Nick doesn't like to sit, so I think I'll have to go with standing for him, too.

Ben basically up and decided one day that he was going to use the potty and never looked back. He chose to use the detachable potty seat (that goes on top of the baby 3-in-1 potty) and the toilet, therefore sitting down. He points it down so that it makes it straight into the toilet! We have tried encouraging him to stand, but he has NO INTEREST. So we are not pushing it!

And just to add...he uses the potty seat at home, but he can use a regular toilet just fine when out and about. That makes things much easier!

Hi Becky! I was also unsure how to teach them - watching Daddy is a must, IMHO. My guys will only sit if they are doing double duty, so to speak.....standing all the way - they had a grand time 'making bubble islands' and I don't think it would work as well from sitting position ??

GL - my guys started after their third birthday and were really ready - they took off pretty quickly with number 1 ;)

We started with sitting. Then they saw daddy standing and wanted to try. They do really good standing and aim well... but they still do every once in a while sit.
