She's already on Prevacid (and has been for the past 2 months)...for the past 2 weeks, she high pitch all out cries in pain (a totally different cry...) when she burps and spit up comes up...it's really hurting her lately and I can't stand it....I feel aweful.

This friday is our 4 month check up and I'm definitely going to talk to the Dr. about this. Something's got to be done for her.

My SIL uses AXID and Prevacid to control her Son's reflux with success. Anyone use Axid?

Any suggestions?? I think I'm doing the right things...feeding slowly, keeping her up right, feeding small amounts more frequently.

I feel aweful for her :(

Is she on formula or breastmilk? If formula, what kind? Are you thickening?

My babies were on Axid, and then an Axid/Reglan combo for awhile, before we switched the Axid to Prevacid. I haven't used the Axid and Prevacid together, so no help there.

I'm sorry she's struggling. Definitely talk to your doc, ASAP.

We are on Soy formula and not thickening at this time...it was just too constipating for them (the soy and the rice cereal). We tried thickening for a couple weeks and the contipation was heart breaking for them...

That lead to another question...how the heck am I going to start them on solids (rice cereal) and keep them on soy without having them to struggle with constipation.

Oh, how I hate this!!!! Poor little pea!

You can use baby oatmeal also, and it's not constipating. In fact, it gave my kids major blowouts, so I had to limit it.

How much prevacid are you on? I would just make sure they can't up her dose. Mine still had reflux on prevacid until the upped it to I think 7.5 mg twice a day. We also had to thicken. As for starting solids, definitely go with oatmeal--we added rice to milk and it constipated them also, but oatmeal was okay.

Good luck--We know how tough reflux can be....wish I could offer more....

I've heard some babies being allergic to soy. We switched to Enfamil Lactose Free and that worked great for us.

Also, I don't know why all doctors push to start babies on rice cereal and not on regular veggies like everyone had been doing that for centuries. The reason why I am saying that is because my daughter had really bad constipation and reflux (on Prevacid), I started to give her papaya (which can ease reflux & is good on digestion) and it seemed to help her a bit. I don't really see a point of rice cereal as it's just a starch with no nutritional value where 3 oz of papaya meets child's daily needs for vitamin C. Just my opinion though and you should do what you think is best for your baby.

Generally, after 1 week on solids, my daughter's reflux just disappeared. Maybe you can try and it will help.

    Best of luck!

Our Ped GI was quick to point out that lots of babies with reflux and/or a milk protein intolerance have issues with soy. So I might bring that up to your Ped about switching off the soy. And I would try Oatmeal if they are having issues with the rice.

Sorry she is having such a rough time right now. Reflux is so hard on everyone involved.

If a milk based formula isn't good for reflux and soy may not be good either...than what are the other options?

DS deals with severe reflux and he is on 7.5 mg Prevacid Solutab 2x/day. The prevacid helped immensely right away, but it wasn't until we changed his milk-based formula to Enfamil's lactose-free, hypoallergenic formula, Nutramigen, that he became a very, very happy baby. The combination of the two (meds & formula) made all the difference in the world for us. I believe Similac makes a version of lactose-free formula also.

A hypoallergenic, like Nutramigen or Alimentum.

Yep, we did Alimentum and within about 24 hours saw a huge difference in Derek.

Holy moly the hypoallergenic formulas are expensive!!!!! Wow...with me not working, moving her to that is rough.

So I talked to my pedi on the phone and she wanted me to increase my daughters Prevacid to 3/4 of a 15ml tablet. So I did 3 days ago (Tues a.m.). Today is Thursday and today she started with the worst loose BM's (3 today...and usually she a bit constipated from the Soy and has little firmer BM's) and on Wed. I noticed this strange bumpy rash--kinda like goosebumps are all over her legs, chest/belly, and arms...it's not red or anything, just like she's got goosebumps all the time...weird...Reaction????

She does have some eczema spots on her arms and she's had those for a while and I've been treating those...but this goosebummy thing is new. WTH?

Poor kiddo...nothing seems to be working for her!

Tomorrow is our 4 month visit and I got alot to talk to the pedi about!

I'm so sorry your baby girl is suffering with reflux :( I think at a bare minimum she should be at a 15mg dose of Prevacid...also when you talk to your pedi ask him about gel thickeners. Our boys couldn't handle Enfamil AR because it constipated them terribly, though it worked wonders at reducing spit up. But so does a gel thickener, without the nasty side effect of constipation.

    Good luck tomorrow!!

We switched my daughter to Nutramigen when she was 6 weeks old. Yes it is expensives, but it made such a difference, that I would have paid any price. To help with the cost, ask you ped if he can give you any coupons or free samples. Our ped was an Enfamil ped and when they asked how the Nutramigen was going, I made a joke about the cost. He went to their store room and gave me two free cans and then about three days later, I received about twenty $5 off coupons in the mail from their formula rep. I also called Enfamil direct and they sent me a couple of free cans and some extra coupons. It doesn't completely off set the cost, but it helps.

Good luck and I hope you find something that works! It is so hard to see your little one miserable.
