I was just wondering how often everyone's babies poop. My boys are going sometimes 3 days without a bm. The nurse at my doc's office says especially since they're breastfed they can go up to a week and it's fine, but they seem to be in pain from it at times. They're always grunting and passing gas and it seems like they really need to go. From what I've read (I don't remember where) you're not supposed to give them laxatives or anything, but I don't know. Anyone else's babies go days with no bm? Sometimes they go every day or more than once a day and sometimes they don't go for several days. Usually when it's been several days they have a "blow out" and have to get a bath immediately. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks ladies!

Mine are formula fed but DS is like clockwork, goes after his 10:30 a.m. bottle every day. DD goes alot less, every other day is her norm (she has gone 3 days only once and sometimes will go every day), she does alot of grunting etc. to get that poop out, but the pedi says it's perfectly normal.

Totally normal for BF babies. My older DD would go about 3 days too without a BM.

When they do go after a day or so, is it soft or hard/dry and formed? My Addie is formula-fed so I know it is a different situation. But, she needs about an ounce of pear juice a day to keep her bm soft and regular. The juice was our ped's idea so if yours is saying all is ok, I wouldn't know what to do either. It is so awful to listen to them grunt and try to pass a bm. :hug99:

Until they started teething, mine would easily go 3 days without pooping. They're breastfed, too. I did notice a bit more crankiness and gas after a couple of days, but since that was the way their systems wanted to work, we went with it...with a lot of extra cuddles during that last day!

My Annalise is like that but she goes longer. She usually is miserable the day and night before (up throughout the night) and then BOOM major explosion. I have been told it is normal but I have to say a baby that uncomfortable isn't normal in my opinion. I haven't found a solution to it and am hopeful she will get more regular once we introduce solids.

Mine do this too, our Doc said it was ok since they are Bf. But I hate to see Samuel and Damien so upset before they finally have a major movement.

My doctor suggested using Karo syrup. I mix a few teaspoons with about 2 ounces of warm water and mix it until it doesn't look thick anymore. Give it once or twice a day until they poop. The first time I used it, Parker was on such a sugar high! But I've used it a few other times and it works every time.

It's totally ok! Breastmilk is so perfect that there just isn't as much to poop out - they use almost everything upl! :D

At that age, my babies often seemed gassy and uncomfortable, but the pedi said it's just because those intestines are so tiny and they're still developing the muscles to process everything. Nothing's wrong, it's just more of a workout for them now than it will be later. Gas drops can help sometimes. Gentle tummy massage might help relieve the discomfort.

One of our girls once went 11 days. I was freaking out but pedi assured me it was ok.

On average my bf guys went every 4-7 days but Lucas did go as long at 12 days once. Was told it was normal for bf babies. If it's a long time between bms, their bellies become distended and they are truly uncomfortable I'd call the ped but otherwise sounds normal.

It's not the grunting or frequency you need to worry about, it's the consistency. If it's thicker than peanut butter then they are a little constipated. If it's hard and pebbly then 1-4 oz of pear juice will do the trick.

If it's soft like cottage cheese then there is absolutely no need to worry. That's normal poop. Breastfed babies don't poop very often sometimes because they digest all the milk and there's not enough left over to poop. But then again when they finally do poop it goes all the way up the front, back and out the sides. <_<

But yeah, there's no need to worry.

My twins are one day younger than yours and I have had the same concerns. Mine haven't gone three days, but they have gone two and sometimes it seems to me like they are in pain as well. Now it seems liek they are pooping at least once a day. From what I have been told it is fine.
