I'm sure this has been asked before but I looked through the first three pages of this forum and didn't see it. I'm starting to think I may be on the verge of getting put on bed rest, so I'm wondering: What are common reasons people get put on bedrest? What led up to it? Was it sudden or had you been having problems for a while? I'd love to hear your experiences.

I was put on bedrest at 24 weeks for PTL, funelling, positive fFN, contractions and dilation. It was VERY sudden. Everything was hunky dorey and then one Saturday afternoon I just didn't feel right. I called my OB and she had me go into L&D, and I never left the hospital until after my girls were born. It was hard, but I am so glad I went in when I did.

Good Luck, I hope you don't have to endure bedrest. Take it easy!!

Wow, that's a lot at once! But yeah, definitely glad you went in and that your twins seem to be doing so well now.
Dumb question but what is funneling? I haven't been able to figure that one out. I understand the cervix shortening or thinning, but am confused by funneling (and how they can tell if you're funneling; I don't know that I've been checked for that).

Funelling is when your cervix opens from the inside out, in the shape of a funnel (does that make sense?). The danger is that the amniotic sac(s) can slip into the opening possibly causing PROM. They check it with a transvaginal u/s probe. I don't know that they check for it routinely, but I was having so many other issues that they did a super intense work up on me.

Yes it was quite a bit at once, but bedrest definitely paid off for us. Even though my girls were 28 weekers, and spent 10 weeks in the NICU they are perfectly healthy 14 month olds now with no lingering problems from being so premature.

Ah, OK, that does make sense. Thanks for solving that mystery for me. ;) So glad your girls are doing great now!

I've been in the hospital since 29 weeks because I was partially dilated and 50% effaced. My first labour was very quick and I nearly didn't make it to the hospital. I think my OB is being overly cautious. I think I'll be delivering in the next couple of days and am praying that we'e all home by the weekend. I am so fed up being here. 8 weeks is such a long time.

I was put on bed rest for a few different things. The main one was the size difference of the babies. I have some signs of pre eclampsia, but my blood pressure is fine. I haven't had any contractions or anything but she did say I'll be on bed rest until I deliver.

My bedrest happened very quickly. I went in for a routine growth scan for the babies and found out that my cervix was very short and I had funnelling. They sent me directly to L&D to get monitored and steriod shots. I was put on home bedrest at that time. Then about 10 days later I went in for another ultrasound to check my cervix and it was even worse and the funnelling had gotten worse too. I was sent straight to L&D to check in as a resident this time. They kept asking me if I was having contractions and I said no. When they hooked me up to the monitors I was contracting every 2 minutes and had no clue! I have been in the hospital since then. Yesterday made 4 weeks in here! Now we are just hoping to get the girls to at least 32 weeks. My doctor doesn't want to do a cervical check on me until absolutely necessary since that can stimulate labor. According to the ultrasounds I am currently 100% effaced but not dialating from the outside yet.

My bedrest is a thing of the past. But my rearend ended up on bedrest at 21 weeks with symptoms of TTTS, a 0.9 cm cervix with an emergency cerclage, some polyhydramnios and ongoing painless contrax. I made it to 34w1d which surprised my docs. I was at home 6 weeks, at the hospital for 7 weeks.

I was put on bed rest at home around 18 weeks with elevated bp that seemed to be purely positional (not pre-e). Just got high if I was not horizontal. At 26 weeks, I went in for my regular growth scan and was admitted with IUGR. It's been a little over 6 weeks now and we'll deliver on December 17th. My girls have kept growing!

Wow! It is so interesting to see the differences in experiences with twins! And with how drs deal with each situation. I have been on bedrest since 25 weeks due to contractions. I was having them before and it was on going since 16 weeks along. By 28 weeks I was dilated 1cm and 70% effaced where i have stayed as of the last visit last week. I have had some big contractions on on going ones for three days now and feel very very heavy today. I am hoping they make it till wednesday when they will be 35 weeks and 6lbs each!

Now that I am officially on bed rest I guess I can add my own answer to this poll if others are interested. ;)
I've been on bedrest since 33w6d because I was having contractions (or at least severe cramping) any time I would get up to walk, and also my legs go numb within a few minutes of sitting in a normal chair; I have to be either lying down or in a recliner with my feet up. I've also developed stage 2 (level 2?) edema just in the last few days so that doesn't help.
My doc said if I feel up to doing a little more, I can, but practically speaking, trips to the bathroom plus getting up to get myself something to eat if DH isn't home is about all I can handle.

Im super suprised she put you on bedrest that late in the game. The day I turned 34w0d my doctor said I could get off bedrest. She said if the twins came then it would be no problem as 34 weeks is one of the last big milestones to hit when having a twin pregnancy. Oddly enough, after being on bedrest for 5 weeks I stayed pregnant another 3 weeks until I begged her to induce me LOL .

I was on bedrest for preterm labor 2x, dilation and funneling. I started dilating at 29wks. By the time I showed up to be induced at 37wks I was already 100% effaced and dilated to 5 and I was STILL NOT in labor :) My doctor was quite suprised!

For me at this point, bedrest isn't really something I needed to be officially "put on"; it's simply a matter of I can't really walk. I mean, I'll walk the short distance to and from the bathroom, etc., but whenever I stand up or walk around at all, I am contracting and cramping to the point I usually end up doubled over and shuffling/limping across the room at a veeeery slow pace. So it's more just a reality than an imposed restriction. Like I said, my OB said if I feel up to doing a little more I can, but at this point I'm pretty much just sedentary; I'm only at all comfortable if I'm reclining w/my feet up or lying down.

I am 30 weeks 1 day along. I'm not on official bed rest yet but I feel I may be soon. Every time I, well... move, I get a contraction and I feel ALL of them. I have at least 20 a day. I don't even think I'm having BH contractions anymore. I feel pressure in my 'you know what' during most of the contractions. Every motion I make stimulates a contraction and I have so much pressure and pain in my pubic area that I can barely get around. It hurts to lift my legs up to take a step, and I feel like I only have one speed- SLOW. Unfortunately, though I have a lot of help from friends and family, I don't get ENOUGH help and I am constantly up and down all day since I am a stay at home mom. My doctor told me to stay off my feet but its just not possible with a rambunctious 20 month old. As of two weeks ago I was not dilated, but with all the pressure down there, I just feel I may be at LEAST thinning out (not that I want to!!). What do you think??? Help!!

20 wks started modified bedrest for cervical shortening and high blood pressure, 24 weeks started strict bedrest for cervical funneling to .8 cm, high blood pressure and borderline gestational diabetes. Bleh, 10 wks now... As far as staying off of your feet goes my mom and dad do a lot (dad doesn't work) and then when my hubby gets home he handles things from there. It's an inconvenience to everyone but they all feel that it will be worth it in the end. Thank goodness for my family!!!

I am on bedrest starting at 17 weeks until....???? for placenta previa.

It usually happens earlier in pregnancy or much later, but I seem to have fallen in between the cracks.

There is a chance it can resolve itself, so I am hoping and praying it does.

It looks like we are neck and neck with delivery dates (I have a scheduled c-section for my husband's birthday-3/10/09). I went to triage a week ago Wednesday after feeling dizzy, edema in my feet and face, and just feeling off. My blood pressure was up, but not dangerously so. The next day my ob-gyn put me on bed rest simply to keep the edema down, and my blood pressure from rising. This seems to have done the trick after this mornings follow-up visit! I have not had contractions that I can feel, but if you are, I would not hesitate to ask your ob-gyn about what restrictions you should be under. To help me out, my sister paid for daycare for my 3 1/2 year old for a month so I can focus on rest. I wonder if this might be possible for you as well? Keep in touch and let me know how you are doing : )

Hi all- I'm new to the board and was put on bedrest yesterday. At my 29 week ultrasound, with nothing but braxton hicks contractions on occassion the past few weeks, I went from having a 4.5cm cervix six weeks ago to "paper thin" and 4cm dilated. So, needless to say they gave me the celestone injection, hubby gave injection #2 today, and they started me on procardia to be safe. I can stay home as long as I don't start contracting. Luckily, I'm also a NICU nurse so I'm not too shocked, just terriby bored!!

Hi, I'm new here too - I'm on bedrest for laser surgery after TTTS was diagnosed. I started leaking water after the surgery, which is fairly common, i hear. I am now 20 weeks pregnant, so I hope it lasts for a LONG time so they can cook as long as possible.

    Hi!

Wow! It's amazing how quickly things can change from everything going smoothly, to needing to really focus in on your body. I know what you mean about being terribly bored. Today is day 10 of bed rest for elevated blood pressure, edema, and hyper-reflexivity; I do not have family in town, and there are so many things that need to be done before we can truly be ready for the twins. That for me is frustrating. I want to do things in preparation!! Trying not to stress is the hardest job right now. My husband is in the midst of a job search, so I can't really put the to-do list on him...although that would be nice : ) Hope your days go well-and your little ones stay put until they are 100% ready to enjoy the world!

I can totally relate-my hubby has been laid off since July, and has now gone back to school. Unemployment runs out in March, so he's still trying to find something, but no luck so far. Our closest family is 400 miles away, so my poor kids are having to help a lot! Good luck to you as well~

I got put on modified bedrest at 26 weeks due to funneling, and then on strict bedrest (no more stairs for me, just bathroom and shower privileges only) at 28 weeks due to 50% thinning out and gestational diabetes. I am now at 31 weeks, just wishing and hoping that babies will stay in there until week 37 at least! Hang in there ladies, it will all be worth it in the end! BIG HUGS!

I'm on bedrest as of Friday of last week. I had a positive fFN and was sent to L&D for steroid shots. I'm 32 weeks along and hope to keep them in to 38 weeks. I'm very nervous and not sure if I am doing bedrest properly.

oh good luck to you. i was put on bed rest (where i remain) at 22.5 weeks for complete placenta previa also. i went into the hospital january 1st after bleeding and passing a blood clot. they kept me there for 14 days. i was also contracting and went on magnesium sulfate for 4 dreadful days and then out of L&D and into antepartum for the remaining 10 days where they monitored the babies and me. i have been on procardia ever since for the contractions. i am now on bedrest at my mothers house where i will remain until i deliver unless i bleed again - i will be hospitalized for the duration. i have been back to the hospital for 1 over night scary visit after bleeding again but it was pretty minor so they sent me home. i feel so fortunate to still be pregnant at 30 wks 2 days. every day sure counts. one of the hardest things for me has been that i live in california and was visiting family in michigan when i went into the hospital and i have not been able to go back to california and now have a new doctor and will deliver here. i was planning on working still etc. it has been a crazy surprise to come here for a 10 day visit and end up staying probably for about 4 months when we are all done. so far the babies are doing amazingly well - never have been in distress at all - it is just that stubborn placenta with baby A that is completely covering my cervix. i hope yours moves but i highly recommend the bedest - it is saving us i know. :)

I am on bed rest - because it is my Drs policy to put every twin mom on bed rest at 28 weeks.

I have not had any recent issues to warrant bed rest, but that is what he has been doing for 30 years - he says that it works.

I am 31 weeks in the morning!

  31. Hi fellow bedrest victims! LOL...

I was put on modified bedrest at 30 weeks due to poor fetal growth for Baby A. Her abdomen is not growing proportionate to the rest of her body. Also, her amniotic fluid was low and she had intermitent blood flow thru the ambilical cord (bad placenta location). I was admitted into to the hospital pretty much directly from my ultrasound appt 3 weeks ago. They monitored me for 24 hours and the babies looked stable, so they released me to modified bedrest at home. I am now going in for NST and Dopler readings (umbilical cord flow) twice a week. So far everything is remaining stable. The Dopler has been good, and the fluid, well it is fluctuating a lot (going up a little, then back down, then back up a little...etc). I feel so fortunate that I am able to be on bedrest at home, I can't imagine having to be in the hospital on bedrest. I think I would get incrediblly depressed. So we're hoping to hang in there until at least 36 weeks! I have another growth scan on Tuesday, so, hopefully baby A has grown more, if not then I have a feeling I will be admitted again, given the steroid shot and a c/s will be scheduled. I've gotta be ready for anything!

I am on modified bedrest due to TTTS. We are doing well, they just want me to really take it easy and put weight on these babies and try to bake them as long as possible. I have been on it since the surgery on Feb.2, but really I kinda had myself on it since Christmas due to thrombossed hemmrhoids (very painful) so I have been on it since about Christmas if you count that.

I have been on modified bedrest since 17 weeks due to TTTS. My cervical length has been great so far and I haven't had any contrax or signs of ptl (thank god!) but my doctor thought it would be best to be on bedrest to help the babies grow.

I did have a week of strict bedrest after going in for TTTS laser surgery (which they weren't able to complete b/c of the postion of the babies) but after getting the all clear from that I'm back to plain old house arrest.

My heart goes out to you ladies who are on strict or hosptial bedrest.

  34. So I'm adding my name to this list now as well.

After an uneventful 28 weeks, I went in for a routine OB appt (no u/s) and found my BP elevated and trace amounts of protein in my blood. Had an u/s two days later, found that there was a discordancy in sizes between the twins (fraternal di/di) of 23%. Got a call from the Dr. two days later saying that I should head to the hospital for bloodwork. I never left. I was diagnosed with mild-preeclampsia with HELLP syndrome. I am now 29w2d and according to the Dr, should plan to be here until I deliver which I hope will be after 36weeks. They are monitoring me closely with bp readings every few hours, blood work every two days, urine analysis, NST's and u/s's. I am bored out of my mind but I would rather have them be inside cooking than outside at this stage.

I was put on bedrest one week before our TTTS laser surgery. So that means from week 19 all the way through until week 36 when they decided to come on out...now my doc said at week 34 I could take myself off of it but by that time it was so dang hard to walk anyway! Bedrest is so much more mental than physical good luck ladies I about lost my mind but I made it!
