DD has a really horrible diaper rash, it's already almost three weeks. We've tried virtually everything (zinc oxide creams, bacitracin, bactroban, lotramin, etc), but it's still there. The spots are looking purple now, and they bleed often. We put her to sleep lately without a diaper (as per the ped's only advice...) with the hopes of letting it air dry and hopefully help it heal. So far it's still there. She also has diarrhea for the same amount of time, so I figure that the diarrhea keeps the rash from getting better. I don't think it's normal to have diarrhea/rash for this long, or is it??? I'm at my wits end.

Oh, and DS is developing his rash too. He has diarrhea already.

Is there ANYBODY who has a glimmer of hope/insight/advice for me?

I am assuming you have already seen the pedi about this then? has yeast infection been ruled out? did s/he offer any suggestions for foods to help w/ the diarrhea what is causing it? I would avoid too much juice, but make sure they are getting enough water/formula/milk? some nice lukewarm baths to help soothe their bottoms, then pat/air dry and slather with the diaper cream. have you recently started them drinking milk? they may not be tolerating it... sorry that is all I can come up w/

I was going to ask if you had switched them to whole milk also. We had constant diarrhea and rashes with the switch, and now my babies are on rice milk.

Chloe had the same thing for 6 days. I took her to the pedi twice (3rd day and 5th day) and he diagnosed 'stomach virus'.

The pedi gave me a medicine (mixed with milk) to help with the diarrhea and special see-through cream to put on her severe nappy rash. (First I would put this cream on, then half an hour later put on normal diaper cream). I kept her on a restrictive diet, no fruit apart from banana. She actually had a good appetite during this time but she lost a bit of weight still. I would say avoid fruit juice.

ditto what the pp have said -

I would stick with bananas, rice, applesauce and toast avoiding dairy and after every diaper change I would stick her fanny under the faucet and using Dove hypoallergenic bar soap rinse her off and like you are doing, I would let her air out as much as possibe and when she did have to wear a diaper, I would coat her in a mixture of 1 part each Desitin,Bacitracin and Lotrimin

bless her sweet heart (and yours!)

do they go to daycare? my oldest did and he got a bacterial infection in his stomach I can't remember the name of it but they told me it was pretty common in kids that go to daycare (or school ) and they started him on an antibiotic- after a month of terrible diarrhea - 24hrs after starting the antibiotic he was back to normal!!
and I had to INSIST that our pedi test a stool sample - he thought the diarrhea was a dietary issue - thank goodness I did -

oh and I know the diarrhea is causing the rash - but have you changed diaper brands? if so that may cause the rash to linger - just trying to think of anything to help!??!!

I am going through a similar problem for about 4 weeks now. I am thinking it could be whole milk too. I have tried soy and that was worse, so I am not sure where to go with it next.

Thank you all for your replies and helpful suggestions!

They are not on whole milk yet (scared to even try!) I think it all started when I gave them meatballs for the first time, I noticed an increase in bowel movement. Suddenly it turned into diarrhea with the rashes and all. They just had meat that one time - since then I have never given it again, thinking that was the culprit. But it isn't, because the rash and diarrhea are still there, more than two weeks later, am I right? I think I will try meatballs again and see how that goes!

Also, I don't give them juice (didn't care for the extra sugars). The doctor gave me this little container to take a stool sample, haven't gotten around to filling it yet, but now I will (thanks for mentioning it).

I was thinking of blaming all this on teething, but the pedi didn't seem quick to agree with me (I guess that's a good thing).

So I guess I just have to keep it up with the air drying and lotion (thanks for the mixture idea). I would love some kind of quick fix, like an antibiotic or something. I don't think it's fungal (no more white dots) cuz the lotrimin didn't help a single bit.

Thanks all for your ideas and suggestions!

Btw, is it normal to be purple now?? With big boils? very scary looking....

Have you considered a yeast infection? Mine got a yeast infection in the diaper area at the same time and it took about 3 weeks of using a yeast cream to get rid of it.

Did your Dr see it when it looked like this?
My son just got over a really bad diaper rash. We used Neosporin on the open bleeding parts and butt paste on the rest.
Sorry you guys are going through this I know how much it sucks!!!
