When did your kids get into Play-Doh? What about fingerpaint? Just trying to think of some fun new activities...and hoping for advice from the veterans before we take the plunge with such messy stuff!

We have yet to do either ! My boys go to pre-school though and get plenty of it there .. I would rather stick to Aqua Doodle .. MUCH easier to clean up. :)

Seriously though .. as long as you think they wont EAT it .. play dough is great for little hands. It helps to strengthen fingers and promotes lots of creativity. The same can be said for finger painting .. PLUS its great fun !

and, if you think they WILL eat it, then just get a good recipe that's edible! i teach elementary school and we've done tons of different playdoh recipes. one had cininmmon and apple sauce in it that we let them taste. first graders can resist that sort of thing a bit, but 2 year olds can't, so try to find one that they will enjoy! (i don't have any of my stuff at home w/me but i'm sure you could google some good recipes).

    have fun!

We have done both. We started with the fingerpaints back in the summer. I would just strip them down to their diapers and put a few large pieces of poster board outside on our deck. I would take some large tupperware containers and squeeze the fingerpaint into the them. Then I just backed away and let them have at it. When they were done I would spray them down with the hose and then take them up for a bath.

They have used playdoh but they seem to bore of it quite quickly.

We haven't tried play-doh but, they have fingerpainted.
Like pp we stripped them down to their diapers, put down posterboard on our kithchen floor and squirted some of each color onto the posterboard and let them slip and slide and play. They enjoyed it alot but, it was little messy!

I have a great play-doh recipe if you're interested! I've made it often for Nadia's preschool class. It doesn't taste good, but it's safe if eaten.

That said, we haven't started play-doh yet with K&K -- I think they'll probably just eat it at this point. But, now that you mention it, I might try it -- it's really great for developing fine motor skills.

I *so* don't have the patience for finger painting at home, LOL. I really want to be that mom, but alas, I'm not. I've heard that finger painting with chocolate pudding is great fun, and tasty, too. :)

ETA -- I went to a kindergarten readiness session a few months back, and they stressed how great finger painting was for kids of all ages, to help them "cross the midline" -- in other words, develop the ability to use both arms on both sides of the body, past the midline. Who knew?

We just tried finger paints for the first time the other day....

It was a huge rounding NON-success, lol!

I kept showing them how to do it, and they'd stick their fingers in the paint and then yell "Hand, hand!!!!" Until I got a paper towel to wipe off their fingers

We've busted out the play doh a few times, but they don't really care one way or another (but that was a while ago, so maybe it's worth trying again)

    They really like crayons though!

I don't remember when I started play doh with my girls but my son has been playing with since before he was 2. They all love play doh. I just let me niece play with it for the first time too and she's 18mths. She didn't put it in her mouth either. He favorite thing was pulling it apart and then I would come along take her hands and collect all the little pieces and squish the playdoh back together in her hands so she could get used to it. I think she liked it? I haven't tried finger painting with any of my kids yet but I think I will try this summer when they can go out side with it. I have done water paints with paint brushes which they loved to do. My kids have over sized t-shirts that they were for all crafts and I have an old plastic table cloth that I use also. so no clothes get ruined and my table doesn't either.

:rotflmbo: This would probably be my girls too!

The sitter has painted with them with water paints and I'm sure fingers were involved. We haven't done play doh yet, but I think its an outside toy so when the weather gets nicer we'll break it out. My girls love art projects though- crayons, markers, stickers, etc.

We do finger paints, coloring with markers and crayons, paint with water, and play-doh. Our nanny does it with them during the day, but we will do it in the evening with them sometimes if we need a different distraction. Sometimes they ask specifically for art time...well my DS calls all things art "yellow" for some reason.

As with all things, it does not hold their attention for long, but it is good for about 15 minutes or so. They try to eat the play doh and it makes me laugh because I'll tell them, "it tastes yucky" - they will do it anyway and then spit it out and look at me like "why didn't you tell me this would taste yucky." It makes me laugh. We have a recipe for homemade play doh, but I got a bunch of ready-made stuff for Christmas, so we are using that. They like rolling it, squishing it, and using stamps to make designs on it. It's fun!

I waited till after 2 for playdoh and finger paints were probably around 2, but that's just me being lazy!! I would do it! They aren't toxic, so if it goes in their mouth it's all good!
