When did your kids start playing with play-doh? Is it completely crazy to try at 18 months (16 months adjusted)? I just know they'll eat it. Anyone have a good recipe for homemade play-doh?

I've never tried it but I don't see what it could hurt! Let us know how it goes!

I don't think it's crazy at all. My kids are 18 months (also 15 months adjusted) and we've been playing with play doh for the last couple months. They love to pound it and squish it. They really don't even try to eat it. Sometimes they are more fascinated with the play doh containers than the play doh itself.

I started around that age. I used home-made play dough so if they experimented with a few bites/licks I wasn't worried - I knew exactly what was in it.

But I wouldn't recommend the edible kind with Kool Aid, etc. - sends them the wrong message. You don't want to encourage them to eat it!

My girls have been playing with play doh for a while now. They did try to eat it, but thankfully they didn't like it so that ended that. They haven't really caught on to the play doh concept though, and they tend to be more fascinated with the container it comes in!

I don't see any reason not to try. Just don't expect them to do more than squish it a bit and be prepared to have to stop them from eating it over and over. Also at this stage it might only hold their interest for five or ten minutes.

I make my own playdough, my favourite recipie is one you cook and use cream of tartar in- the first recipie on the page Nancy linked to looks similar to it (I can dig out the exact recipie if you want, but the measurements are all in metric). I store it wrapped in clingfilm and then in an airtight container and it lasts ages.

I just threw all of our playdough away....or what was left anyways. I bought it several months ago (around 18-20 months old). My DD does fine with it. My DS eats it, licks, hides it, flushes it down the toilet. I just got tired of constantly having to tell him...keep it at the table, we don't eat it, No mouth, Don't lick it, etc..... It drove me crazy. I will wait awhile before I try it again.

You don't know until you try though. Like I said my DD did just fine with it. I would try the homemade stuff though that way if they do eat it, it's not as big of a deal.

Not too early at all!! We started around that age. I gave them popsicle sticks, cookie cutters, straws, and other stuff around the house to poke it with and play with and they didn't stick it in their mouths too much. Go for it! :good:
