    Hi twin-mommies-to be:

At 17 weeks I was diagnosed with placenta previa and put on bed rest. I know that sometimes placenta previa can correct itself, but it's rare with twins. Has anyone else had this happen to them? The heavy bleeding....all at once? It's scary.

I am on bed rest now, but may be released to do light activity after my appointment today. I still have 20 weeks to go! I'm happy to do it for the babies...but I was not prepared for this so early. Neither were the doctors.

My appointment didn't go so well. I don't know if anyone out there has had this happen to them, but while lying on the ultrasound "table" I started to feel woozy. Turns out my uterus was pressing down on a major artery, and I was losing blood supply to my head. I had to roll over, and I almost passed out. I was sweating and couldn't hear. The doctor said I went into the first stage of shock.

So we did not get to finish the complete ultrasound. We got some measurements, but we were not able to do a vaginal ultrasound to take a look at the placenta. HOWEVER, the ultrasound technician said it looked as if it had moved from two weeks ago. He said he was 80% sure he could rate it a partial previa instead of a complete previa. This means I may be OK in a few weeks as the uterus grows.

But in the mean time, I am back on strict bed rest. I lost my driving privileges. And I'm pretty bummed. If this doesn't resolve itself, I will be on bedrest for more than 20 weeks.

Yipes. That's torture for someone like me. My husband and I have a farm, I garden, paint, and we have a passive solar home that requires a lot of work. Everyone keeps saying enjoy the rest now while it lasts...so I will do my best.

Funny. I thought placenta previa was fairly common. It doesn't seem that way from these forums.

Yes, I have had that happen before actually! My u/s's during my twin pregnancy were torture because I couldn't be anywhere even close to lying on my back or I would pass out. Usually just a change in position, rolling completely onto my side, would solve the problem, although it always took a few minutes to recover from it.

Partial previa is good! I don't really know that much about previa, but, I would think that it would be MORE likely to correct itself in a twin pregnancy since your uterus is stretching/growing that much more? I think I have seen a few posts about it in the expecting forum. If you go down to the bottom of the page in the main expecting forum, and use the 'search' feature, I bet you will find some stories.

I'm sorry about the bedrest. I was on 9 weeks of it and it was not fun....but, the end result was 2 healthy babies. Hang in there.

Looks like you and I will be on bedrest for some time  but it will be worth it for the health of the babies. I told my work and my family that my new job is to be a human incubator

My room isn't done yet either (or even thought of for that matter). I thought I would have worked most of the time but that Idea was shot.

My previa scared the crap out of us. one morning I work up and had the "gush"feeling and went to the bathroom
and a HUGE clot "fell " out (about the sized of my hand). I really thought it was one of the babies. I grabbed it and ran to the doc's office (lucky they are literally 10 houses from mine.) The got me right in and did an ultrasound and told me about the privia and the blood clot I have and said the babies were fine but I was going to be out until further notice.

so I'm learning to be lazy  I'm really good at it. LOL Thank God I like the court shows onTV.

good luck and keep us posted.

I had placenta previa earlier in this pregnancy....I didn't however have any complications from it.( I can't imagine how scary all that bleeding would be  ) Mine was only discovered at our 20wk u/s when it showed I had a complete previa...but again I never had any bleeding. The only restriction(I was still working 12hr shifts as a nurse) I had was pelvic rest....no sex, no internal exams. Now at almost 36wks it has totally corrected itself and it hanging out bellow my belly button. So hang in there, its possible for everything to turn out just fine.
BTW I am now on bedrest for pre-e, multiple pregnancy is sooo unpredictable

I too had this and was on bed rest for partial placenta til about 26 weeks. Had bleeding on and off the whole time. Was very scary. Then it corrected self. then by 32 weeks back on bed rest for swelling. Just know that when you see your babies and hold them it is all worth it!!!!!!!!!

On Sunday night I got up from bed to go to the bathroom and noticed wetness under me and when I saw it was blood I was horrified. There was also a baseball sized clot that came out and I was sure it was part of the placenta or something. I stayed in the hospital for three days and have been home for two and it is just scary every time I get up to go to the bathroom. If I bleed again, I will either be on hospital bed rest as long as possible or will have an immediate c-section if the bleeding can't be stopped. So scary. Fortunately, we are 30 weeks 2 days so I am hoping to make it a few more weeks before bleeding again but it could be any day or it can be longer. The uncertainty is scary.

I hope you hang in there and don't experience the heavy bleeding!!!!

MaKettle - cute name! I don't have any advice to offer - only my sympathies for being on bedrest. I am on strict bedrest because my water is leaking after laser surgery for TTTS. I am 20.5 weeks, so you at aleast have a bedrest buddy!!!

We doing all this for our little ones so it will be worth it in the end when we get to hold them in our arms :) I keep telling myself this is a cake walk compared to terrible 2's with twins - it makes me feel a little better and appreciate the time off!! :)

  11. I am not technically on bedrest yet, but have been encouraged to stay off my feet for the same reason at a little before 10 weeks (2 weeks ago) and a gushing blood episode. For the past week I have been having dark brown discharge.....any thoughts on that?

I can't offer any info on placenta previa but I am on moderate bed rest for PTL and short cervix. You are right everyone says to enjoy it but it is hard when you feel helpless and you know there is so much to be done.

I don't see many posts to the bed rest forum so I :friends: spend a lot of time looking at the genreal "expecting forum" trying to pick up tidbits.

Sounds like we are all in for the long haul!

I also was on bedrest at 15 weeks. I'm now at 31 weeks and I'm on Modified bed rest now which to me it means is to sleep alot and rest and be lazy.

The brown discharge is old blood from your bleeding episode. As long as it's brown than it's ok. (per my doctor). My brown discarge lasted about a month.

You MUST really take it easy. Don't lift anything or be a hero. take advantage of everyone else helping. The more you rest and off your feet than the more the body can send nutrients to the babies.

  14. Thanks for the response. That was my thought as well. As far as being a hero....my family is lucky if I get off the couch to bathe!! lol The fatique is making this resting thing really easy for me to do!!!!

    Yes,

I too was diagnosed with Placenta Previa at 18 weeks. Because there was no bleeding, I had no bedrest. By 25 weeks, it had cleared up entirely (this is very common). I wouldn't worry if I were you.....my best friend as well as my sister-in-law were diagnosed early in pregnancy and had it clear up as well. Hang in there; there's a good chance it'll go away.
