I posted a few days ago about the logistics of vomit. Well- the vomit turned into diarrhea which turned into dehydration which after 2 days landed us in the ER and ended up with an overnight stay in the hospital. We were officially diagnosed with Rotavirus. I work at a hospital and was talking to some pediatrician coworkers about the whole thing and they were shocked that the girls weren't vaccinated against rotavirus - apparently a highly effective oral vaccine. So I called my doc to see about getting is for my remaining healthy child and they told me that she was too old for it. I did a little research and this vaccine is on the recommended immunization schedule and has to be given between 6 and 14 wks. For some reason it wasn't given to our girls and now its too late. I'm so angry because we spent the better part of a week up to our necks in vomit and diarrhea and our little girl had to be given IV fluids and spent the night in the hospital - and IT ALL COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED!!!! Why wouldnt they offer us this vaccine??? Is it my job as a parent to show up with the immunization schedule and double check that the doctor is doing their job???
How many of you know if your kids are vaccinated against rotavirus?
thanks for listening to me vent

I'm sorry that this happened  I would be angry if this happened to my little ones too. I know mine were vaccinated from it. I hope they feel better soon!

That's crazy! Did the doctor have any explaination as to whjy they didn't get they didn't get it? I would be SO mad! Thankfully your little girl is ok! How is she feeling now? What are the chances that her sister is going to get it?

Does the doctor know you are upset?

I'm sorry that your family had to go through this. It really was unnecessary!

I know our boys were not. We were told that unless they are in daycare or spend a lot of time with other kids, they did not need it so we decided not to give it to them.

I hope they feel better soon.

Ours did get the rotavirus vaccine, though our pedi's office isn't the best at keeping up with shots. I am the one who has twice now pointed out that we missed a vaccine. We missed one of the early Hep B shots, so we had it when we should have had the 3rd Hep B shot. And then since we should have already had the 3rd HEP B shot they never even noticed that we didn't get it, so I had to remind them at our 1 year appt.

They seem to do an okay job most of the time if you are on schedule. If you ever miss one for whatever reason or elect to do a delayed schedule they would never keep up with it. I am glad you reminded me - I should probably check their records against the recommended shots again to make sure we haven't missed anymore.

Ugh, I'm sorry. We went through a nasty bout of rotavirus with my older DD, so I dreaded going through it with my twins.

I knew about the rotavirus vaccine, but was very nervous about it because they came out with one ten years ago, and then had to pull it because it was injuring babies. The new one hasn't been out for very long.

We're very cautious about vaccinations, and didn't start with any others until my kiddos were six months old. However, the ped did tell us that rotavirus had to be given early if we wanted it. I waffled and waffled, and then chose to get it because of the rough time Nadia had with the virus.

FYI, we all had some nasty stomach illness, lots of vomiting followed by diarrhea, a couple months ago -- it *wasn't* rotavirus, but I'd say it was worse.

Hope your little ones are back to normal soon!

Oh I would be so mad. It is the doctors job to get the shots/immunization to the kids when they need them.
    Yes mine got it.

 I'm sorry your lil one is so sick. Ours didn't get the vaccine either. I actually asked about it around a year and was told we were too old. The reason my girls didn't get it was that they were tiny and we didn't start vaccinating until 4 months.

I am sorry. We did get the vaccine but it was very early on in their schedule. With mine being so early anything like that would have meant an extended hospital stay. I would discuss you concerns with your Ped for sure.

I chose not to give mine the vaccine. However, the pediatrician recommended it to me twice- but supported my overall plan for delayed vaccinations with a few deletions as I chose. I would be upset the pedi didn't discuss that with you and give you the choice.

I didn't even know there was a vaccine...
both my twins and my 2 year old had it (for a solid 13 days!) last month - it was horrible!!
thankfully between the 3 of them we only landed in the ER once during the 2 weeks.

I am so sorry. That really stinks. Poor baby!

Maybe you could talk to the doc and suggest they could look at how they make sure other babies don't fall through this crack. you could help others by doing that.

We had the vaccine. It was provided to us just like all the others.
