Pillow Reccomendations?

The girls have been using pillows my mom made that are about 9 x 12 and very flat. I noticed recently they are piling a blanket on top to make it bigger. I didn't want them to sleep on an "uneven" pile so I was thinking that they are ready for a regular pillow but wondered if it should be firm or soft or if it mattered at 4.5 years old. Also, any particular filler?

Also, if there are any particular brands you like, I'd love to hear your recommendations.

My girls are only two, so this may not be helpful, but we let them pick out their own pillows. They didn't like the little flat travel pillows I bought for them, and seemed to like lying in my bed with my pillow (or DH's). So one day we went to the store and they picked out pillows. One girl chose a very flat and firm pillow the other chose one that's medium density and pretty puffy. I only let them get the natural kind because I figure at this age they don't need extra chemicals that close to their heads 12 hours a day. But that's just me. Any stuffing material is probably fine.

 

I got mine a soft but very flat pillow. It has worked well!

 

I found some kids' pillows at Bed, Bath & Beyond that are very soft and squishy -- I like them because I was worried about my kiddos getting cricks in their necks from being too elevated. (Or "cricket" as Nadia would say!)

All three of mine have the same one, and Nadia seems very comfortable on it. K&K still start out on the pillows, but end up faces-down at the other end of their cribs.

 

I'm trying to remember the site we ordered from. It was called Mr. Bobbles or something. They give a twin discount....I need to figure it out. I need bigger pillows for the kids.

I bought regular ones at Macy's but they take up a third of their "crib converted to toddler bed."

I am going to take a look at those pillows you recommended Becca at Bed Bath and Beyond!

Dfaut, I looked at the Mr. Bobbles and they have toddler pillows. You mentioned that you need larger ones....are the Mr. Bobbles ones too small for your children now?

They are feather, but they are totally natural, and they are washable. We bought 2 originally, then 2 more for daycare use. Then they moved daycares, and weren't allowed to take them any longer. So we have backup pillows, which is great for those rare occasions when you have a mess in bed.

When they get too squished down, a wash and dry fluffs them right back up. Plus DS sweats so much, I want a pillow I can wash regularly anyway. I also have 2 of their king sized pillows on our bed, we use them between our legs at night, and they have held up very well - 6+ years now. We've had the kids' pillows for maybe 2 years now? No complaints.

 

We have just a standard pillow from Target. I bought soft because I didn't want their heads to be too elevated.
