picking bottles

Hi all, I will be doing some bottle feeding so that friends and family can help out with my twin girls that will be arriving in the next 6 weeks or so. I have no idea on what type to use or even how to evaluate them...What do you all recommend?

    Thanks! Shellie

    Hi Shellie!

There really isn't a way to evaluate until the babies arrive. Some babies will only take certain bottles, it's just a trial and error kind of thing. With my first 3 kids, I used the Platex Drop-In system, which I really liked, very easy. Then with the twins, everyone raved about the Dr. Brown's and they were colicky, so I was willing to try anything! I honestly don't think they work any better than the Playtex bottles, and are much more difficult to clean. I am thinking about switching back, simply because, they can drink the Playtex bottles sitting up, because you can squeeze all of the air out of them. HTH! Good luck, can't wait to see you on FY!

Well we started with the Soothie bottle by The First Years(because they liked their Soothie Pacifiers from the Hospital), we quickly realized that they could be causing gas issues and we started using Dr. Browns (gas went away) and if you don't mind the price or all of the parts(and cleaning them) then I would defiantly recommend them. Now that they are older we use Podee bottles pretty much all of the time. HTH.

I got the Playtex drop ins cuz that seemed easiest...for a while we had to feed DD with Avent's because the nipple was stiffer than the Playtex nipples - when she was very small she couldn't seem to understand to open her jaws enough to eat and the playtex nipples would just fold - the Avent's would actually push through her jaws and make her open her mouth farther...

i agree- you won't really know until they come and start tryign them out. so we just got a few of various types. We ended up using the dr. browns for our son who had some reflux problems and it minimized gas and made him eat slower, which (theoreticaly) eased the spitting up. we got some avents, but it wasn't until 3-4 wks. ago that we were able to start using them. even on the level 1's, they were just too sloppy with the flow. we actually just used some kinda cheap gerber bottles for my daughter which worked just fine.
so i would recommend getting a few of various types and just seeing what they like and what works. good luck!

I tried several different kinds. But being a first time mom I had no clue.i read in a book to try the cheap ones first and then go from there. One of my boys did great on the $1.00 Circo bottles from Target and the other had to have the $12.00 Dr. Brown bottles. Wait until they get here and see what they like. [IMG]

i am a huge fan of the drop ins. The cleanup is key. It takes no time at all. YOu just throw the plastic drop in bag away and then just clean the nipple.

If you decide to try the Dr Brown's, I would recommend just buying one or two to try at first. I used Avent in the beginning, both babies spit a lot so I tried the Dr Brown's and, honestly, I couldn't tell any difference in the spitting at all, if anything it might have been worse, and neither baby particularly liked the nipple. I went back to the Avent because they are easier to clean, cheaper, and were just as good. Every baby is different, try a couple of different kinds, don't buy too many of any one kind until you try them. [IMG]

I did the Playtex Ventaire's and LOVED them. The babies took to them fine, they were easy to clean and overall a good bottle for us. Good luck.

We use the Parents Choice Health Check Anti-Colic Bottles. You can only get them at walmart but they're a lot like the Dr Browns...only less expensive. Like the Dr Browns, they do have lots of parts and pieces. But they've been great for us!

We only have a handful of these bottles right now and we still won't use any of the other bottles we have! In fact, all of the Health Check bottles were dirty this morning when DDs were hungry and they had to wait for me to wash a couple of them...even though we had 10 or 15 regular bottles that were clean! We've had WAY less burping, spitting up, gassy-ness and grumpiness from the moment we started using them. It just wasn't worth it to me to save an extra 2 minutes by feeding them from another bottle!

We started my girls out on Medela and Avent bottles. They developed colic a few weeks after arriving home and we switched to the Dr Brown bottles and colic was gone in 24 hours! They are amazing bottles, IMO! The only down fall is the cleaning. Unless you have a dishwasher they can be a real pain cleaning all the pieces and parts. They are almost 1 and still on Dr Brown bottles. We have tried to change and they refuse any other bottle. They didnt like the nipple on the Dr Brown bottle, they like the disposable latex nipples like hospitals uses. My girls are too picky! [IMG]

I agree with PPs, you have to wait until they arrive to try them. I didn't buy any bottles until I had them home and then I tried every brand with them. As they rejected each brand, I returned them to the store and they took them back no questions asked (BRU and Walmart). I ended up settling on Dr. Brown's although my initial plan was to use Playtex Drop Ins.

Mine took whatever kind of bottle I gave them. I used the Parents Choice brand, the winnie the pooh ones, and the old fashioned Gerber ones. My guys were usually never particular about a bottle as long as they had one.

All I can add is, whatever you do...DON'T BUY AVENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are aweful. Leak all the time. Nothing worse than feeding your infants in the middle of the night only to find them completely soaked afterwards and having to change them. Pretty much everyone I know who has used Avent agrees. The only reason we haven't changed is cause we have about 18 of them and just can't afford to invest in a whole new set although we curse ourselves everyday about it and swear we will go get new ones. If you can get some different kinds of bottles from different friends it will help you to find a bottle your twins like. It might take a couple of tries before you find one that they will enjoy. If you are registering for one kind just make sure that you only open a couple of them so that if you/the twins don't like them, you can return them. Wish sooooo much I had done that.

We have always used Dr Browns. I am used to cleaning them now. I put them in the dishwasher about 2 times each week for a sanitary cleaning. They have held up really well and the nipples are in great condition. Good luck picking - we were really confused and just went with Dr Browns to see if they were okay. They were, so no reason to switch.

i've always used the cheap gerber ones- they come in a 3-pack & have one blue, one purple & one green twist top with clear plastic bottles. they've been great- no leaking even after TONS of washing in the dishwasher. also, the oz measurement is raised, so doesn't rub off after lots of use. mine are great eaters though & never had any real problems aside from dd being a "happy spitter"- tried other brands of bottles & formula- nothing helped. definitely agree with pp- try cheap first!
