Okay well around Noon I had to run downstairs grab a phone # off of an email and make a quick call. The twinks and RaeLynn were playing in their room all fine and dandy. I hear Ashley fussing but not screaming so I finish up my call and run upstairs. Well all three are now in the livingroom and RaeLynn says, "Ashley was crying because I took the remote away from her." Okie dokie...I go pick up Ashley and look at her and here is what I see.... http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome...JYg&notag=1 RaeLynn finally admits that she pushed Ashley over trying to get the remote away from her and she hit her head on the TV stand. I freak out a little call Dh he doesnt answer. So I call our nurse. She asks if she was knocked out I say I have no idea I was out of the room. I try to ask RaeLynn but she doesnt understand but she says, "No she did not go to sleep, she just cried a little". So as long as there was no knock out or vomit and her pupils seem fine the nurse thinks she is okay. But to keep her awake for at least an hour (great right at nap time) I am still not satisfied so I call our eye Dr, a good friend, but he is out of town for the day. His secretary (my BFF in this town) says to call the County Health Dept. and they will let me know if she needs to go to the ER. Well no friggin answer for over an hour. So I gave up there and Ashley seemed fine so I went ahead and let her nap with Alyssa. I have checked several times and she is breathing and all but I am still worried. It is a pretty big bonk to the noggin'. Dh finally called back and says "dont worry you cant hurt a "M" by hitting them in the head" (his family is known for thickheadedness and their stubborn ways) He quits joking and says he thinks she is fine (I texted him the same pic). So would you have taken you kid to the ER if they seemed fine but took a good blow to the head???

I would have done what you did. Emma has given James and Sean some pretty good bruises on their heads and they look horrible but seem otherwise fine. From what I've heard and seen head wounds bleed and bruise a LOT even though they aren't major. I bet that's what happened here.

I think I would've done the same as you, too. Sometimes I find bruises on my arms and legs that I have no idea how they got there, so maybe it "looks" worse than it is. And it works in the reverse too....I pulled a 3 stooges move last week while trying to rid my yard of a few last minute weeds before the first b-day party...stepped on the end of the rake and before I knew it, up flies the rake BAM right into my face....thought for sure I'd have bruising above my eye...never did have any VISIBLE bruising, but it still is sore a week later ! =) But then again I'm an adult comparing myself to a baby...but I just thought I'd make ya laugh...you're doing a great job! :D

As long as the pupils are fine, no vomit, no loss of consciousness, a big goose-egg like that is nothing to worry about. If she hits her forehead and does NOT bruise, that's something to worry about, because it means the injury is internal. My first got a huge goose-egg on his forehead when his tiny cousin beaned him but good with a rock when he was two. He was very proud of it and admired it frequently. :D Forhead bruises swell really dramatically because the skull prevents the blood that rushes to the injury from collecting under the skin, so it pushes the skin out.

My two were playing on my bed and one of them "helped" the other down. Head first onto the edge of a metal chair. it hit right below his eye. It instantly swelled and bruised. I panicked and wanted to go in. I normally do not, but the idea of an eye issue!!! DH calmed me down. we called, were told essentially the same, watch. And he was fine.

first of all....your little girl is gorgeous!!
Mitchell has hit his head so many times I can't even count. The only time I ever took him to the ER for it was when he had a period of weirdness after her fell off the counter onto his head. I don't know if he lost consciousness bc I wasn't there (my 4 yr old was). He zoned out for the next 30 mins and just stared off into space. I took him to the ER and they observed him for 4 hours and said he had a concussion. Anytime they have a period like that afterwards they said is a concussion... But they basically said the same as the pps. If there was no period of unconsciousness or vomiting or anything out of the ordinary than she is fine. I would have been more worried if there wasn't someone there that saw what happened. I hate when they fall and you don't really know what happened...that scares the crap out fo me.
    Glad she is okay!

You did fine. I've seen bruises that looked just like hers and they always look so much worse than they are.

FWIW, it's pretty hard to miss the signs of a concussion. Trent got one falling off of the woodstove onto the tile floor. I heard the thump and immediate screams so I knew he hadn't been knocked out but he was struggling to get to his feet and acting really weird. He then vomited. I at least knew enough to check his pupils and try to talk to him while I was on the phone with the answering service telling them it was an emergency. He was dazed for about 10 minutes. The doctor told me not to bother bringing him in because his pupils were responsive, he was starting to respond while I was on the phone with her, and he had only vomited once... but if he started getting worse again, to bring him to the ER because that would indicate swelling. It's so very scary. He, of course, did this while I was making dinner so it was almost bedtime. I was seriously freaked out about putting him to bed even though he was acting fine by that point. I don't know how many times I checked on him but I know I didn't sleep that night.

You guys are the best! Thanks!! My MIL also told me the swelling thing, if there is NO swelling then worry because the blood is going INSIDE not OUTSIDE the skull.
