I am so worried about one of my boys right now. I changed him today and the rim of his penis kind of came apart and it's so raw and red! This has happened once before a tiny bit, and I covered it with antibiotic ointment and is seemed to heal. I think it is a bigger problem than I thought because now the whole rim and underneath is flaming red. I think what he has is penile adhesion and it just came apart today. This makes me so sad, as I didn't want to circumcise my boys in the first place! Do any of you have any experience with this? Thanks A worried mommy, Manda
I'd definitely call your pediatrician. My aunt's son was a preemie (don't know if that had anything to do with it), but they apparently didn't keep petroleum jelly on him long enough after the circ, and his re-adhered, and they had to have him recircumsized. But perhaps it could just be some kind of infection/diaper rash? Good luck getting it resolved.
This happened to BOTH of my boys!! I was such a mess after my c section that I didn't get the orders f/ the NICU nurse.. So- I never knew about the vaseline etc!! DH didn't bother to remember either so.. It grew back!! OMG. But my Ped said it's not a big deal!! I was like "What?" Anyway, I guess we're not doing anything about it. My DH is from Italy and isn't circumcized. I should have never done it anyway! I don't know why I did it in the first place. I WILL NEVER DO IT NOW!! OH MY LORD!! Unless it's going to be painful as adults or something-- it's staying like it is!! OUCH!
try some A&D ointment and use alot of it keep applying it until it heals well. also rinse the tip at every diaper change and change him often. after applying the ointment cover the tip with a gauze pad and close up diaper HTH :hug99:
Hi, This happened to my DS. His surgeon had told me to try to pull the skin apart gently and that it would help. Well, one morning, it had come apart on it's own. It was really red and looked raw. I applied ointment and the redness went away in a day or so. I tried to be extra generous with the ointment so that it had a nice coating in case of a poop-tastrophe type diaper. It can't hurt to call your ped though!!
This is so sad! I am feeling so guilty right now for even having him circumcised in the first place! His definitely came apart on its own so maybe it's not adhered too completely. I have him slathered in ointment right now. So, you think I should be putting gauze on it too? I have an appointment with the pedi on Thursday for their checkups anyway. It is icing pretty bad in Memphs right now, and it's Friday...so going to the doc is not really possible at least until Monday. I have been doing some reading and it seems that this condition is not as big as a deal as it FEELS. Maybe I will just see how it looks over the weekend. Thanks for all your replies!
I think it is pretty common, it happened with my older son too. With my new son, I gently pull down on the skin when I change him and put the white petr. jelly on to keep it from getting adhesions. My cousin said her Ped recommended using astroglide!
One of my DS's has this problem too- the hospital never told us to keep pulling the skin back w/ vaseline. I felt terrible!!! However- to make you feel better about circing- the ped said boys who aren't circ'ed ALWAYS have this issue, but moms don't know about it since they can't see it. It naturally separates as he gets erections thru time. So you really wouldn't have "spared" him any by not circing! Just keep some antibiotic ointment on it, and then as it heals up, keep some vaseline on it for awhile- it'll be just fine!!!
My boys weiners were always red right underneath head and I asked the dr and she said that it was normal! She also said try not to pull any of the skin around it way down. I do pull the skin back occassionally to check for lint, but other than that I leave it alone. The first time I saw it I freaked out too, but if you are concerned, call the dr and keep putting vaseline or Aquaphor on it. I swear it's ok.
I had the same problem with my 15 mo. old son. The pediatrician at one of his early appts. (4-6 mo. I think) pulled it back and then a few months or later the same thing happened to me as in your post. She said it can happen and they usually grow out of it. I made sure to pull the skin back when I changed his diaper and clean well and also used A&D ointment. The reddness and swelling usually only lasted a few days. Hope this helps. Angie
Sean had that problem. I just kept it covered in diaper cream to soften the skin. It has corrected itself. I think all those little morning woods helped.
ok thanks for putting this post up. i have never heard of this before and yes i am a new mom of 9 month old twins. in my previous relpy i put to keep A&D ointment on it etc. because that was what i was taught for the home care after circumsion so i thought it would help to heal it. WELL.......I said let me look at my DS's and see if it's ok well it's not part of it is attached on the top. i put some A&d ointment on it and tried to pull it back a little and saw a little blood and stopped. I am definately calling my ped tomorrow. why don't they tell you this to begin with. At least I know to ask them to maybe numb it first before they do what i am afraid they have to do. THANKS FOR POSTING THIS POST :hug99:
I just want to give you guys an update. I took my boys to the pedi yesterday. Doc said that the penile adhesion is completely normal, and it will get better. He did gently pull back the skin (there was no ripping!) He didn't cry...he did kind of throw his arms out with a shocked look on his face. I'm sure it didn't feel good. Two seconds after he did that he gave the pedi a huge grin. Then he said "Well he easily forgives!" He said to keep it slathered in vaseline. Just wanted to let you all know what happened. Thanks for all the responses and support. Poor little man!
One of my sons had that problem just on one side of his penis. Our ped told me to push the skin down everytime I changed him. I just didn't have the courage to cause him any pain & didn't do it faithfully. The adhesion did grow together completely. I kept it clean & figured we'd deal with it later. Our docs never seemed too concerned. Within the last 9 months he has become increasingly interested in his penis, especially when it's hard. One morning I noticed he'd fooled with it enough to tear the adhesion on his own. I'm sure it hurt, but he never mentioned it. I watched it & tried to keep it clean. It looks completely normal now. I'm very relieved.
