Pedialyte

Karina has the stomach flu. She woke up throwing up on Tuesday night. We gave her Pedialyte instead of milk or her high-calorie formula on Wed. She threw up a couple of times on Wed and also started having runny diapers. Yesterday she wasn't throwing up at all. We gave her a couple of bottles of formula and a couple bottles of Pedialyte. She hasn't had much of anything for solids...just a few Cheerios. She is still having really runny diapers. Should I be holding back on the formula/milk and just doing Pedialyte? Does she even need Pedialyte if she is taking fluids? Can she have solids if she can keep them down? This is all so confusing. I worry about her lack of calories since weight gain is an issue. Advice, please.

I would call the Ped and see what they want you to do. My Ped told me not to do Pedialyte for more than a couple of days because that can cause diarrhea too. So, I would stop the Pedialyte especially since she hasnt vomited in a couple of days and go back to formula. I would start out slow with the solids and maybe some of the binding foods like bananas, apples, carrots, and pasta if they eat that. The complex carbs will help. Sorry she has been sick.

I agree with calling your doctor and seeing what they suggest. Mine usually wants me to keep them on the pedialyte (or in our case we do gatorade since mine won't touch pedialyte) or water until the runs stops. My nurse actually suggests using Nilla wafers as a first food when coming off of a tummy bug as well as the bananas, applesauce, rice, toast.

Call the doctors office. It may make a sense to hold off on dairy and maybe try the unflavoured unsweetened rehydration fluid (available in powder) instead of pedialyte. This stuff is not very nice to drink if you are hydrated, but when you are dehydrated it's the best thing on earth and you want more and more until you become rehydrated (I'm talking from personal experience here!) That allows you to see if she really needs it our not.
You will probably also want to give her some probiotics, like in yorgurt or at the pharmacy you can buy probiotic powder to mix into a drink.

I usually give 5 oz of formula and if they dont hold it down they get pedalyte. I cut way down on dairy but I do give it 5oz at a time and every other bottle is pedalyte. I only give them unflavored and only while vomiting or the runny pooops. As soon as that stops I no longer give it to them. I always have sippy cups of water around so they can sip all they want. I do not give solids if they are vomiting but I do if its runny poops. If they dont vomit for 24 hours, I start with the solids again.

So sorry! We had the same thing run through all of us a few weeks ago, and I held off on all dairy for about three or four days. (But, my two are on whole milk, and I wasn't worried about the lack of calories for a few days.)

I did Gatorade Rain, which is milder than regular Gatorade -- it tastes worlds better than Pedialyte, and it's basically the same thing. But, check with your ped to be sure...

Otherwise, lots of rice, potatoes, crackers, bananas, that sort of thing. Even holding off on dairy, we still had runny diapers -- really disgusting blow-out ones -- for more than a week.

Hope it passes quickly! There are two nasty GI bugs going around, and it seems everyone I know is getting them.

I called the Ped. He said since she is no longer throwing up, to use the formula again. He said mix the first few bottles half strength. He said I could use the Pedialyte in between her regular bottles if I wanted to. I gave it to her in her sippy at meal times instead of the whole milk I usually give her. She still had 6 nasty diapers today and she slept all day again. This is really a nasty bug and now I've got it too. I sure hope Annelise doesn't get it.

    Thanks for all the advice.

It is nasty. Both of my girls have it too. Vomitting, massive diarrhea and sleeping all day. We've been battling since Thursday, so we're on day 5. My girls have bad coughs too. We don't have the calorie problem, so we've stopped dairy altogether right now.

We're on Day 6. Thankfully, it's still only Karina. I don't know how Annelise has escaped it. The vomiting came back too. I'm calling the doctor again today because now Karina refuses Pedialyte. I don't know what to do to get fluids into her. :(

Switch flavors or try Gatorade. Diluted white grape juice is acceptable too.
