My 8 month old twin boys are on day 5 of the stomach flu (or rotavirus, not sure). It started with explosive diarrhea (I thought I did a lot of laundry when they were newborns..HA!) & now it's on to vomiting too. It's horrible. Add that to low grade fevers, tummy aches, & overall feeling blah...and we're having a grand time over here!

My question is, does anyone have any suggestions, home recipes, or past experiences on how to get Pedialyte down a resisting 8 month old? My one DS will slurp it down no problem, but as soon as the other TASTES it, forget it! He normally eats ANYTHING, so this surprises me. We've tried various flavors, brands, etc with no luck.

Anyone??? I don't want my little peanut to get dehydrated! The Ped said hopefully the vomiting will only last 24 hrs or so & that he'll be ok in the meanwhile, but I'm still worried! Luckily, he kept down 11 oz already today, along with some rice cereal & bananas, so I won't worry too much unless this lasts for quite some time longer. My other little guy has been vomiting over 24 hrs, so I think we're in for a haul of it. Ugh.

Now if I could JUST get him to keep down some liquid of some sort!

Sorry you are having a yucky day. Try the unflavored pedialyte. We put it in some water & they never knew the difference.

You could try Gatorade! Maybe it would be enough of a difference that he would take it. Or, what about just plain water? Poor punkins, the stomach flu is the worst! I hope they feel better soon. :hug99:

One of my friends just recommended the Pops...I'll have to look into those.

We did FINALLY discover that he likes the BUBBLE GUM flavor (blech, but whatever!). He's still not keeping much of it down, but he will at least TRY.

If they aren't better by this afternoon, we may take a trip into the clinic for some IV fluids. They're getting a LITTLE too dehydrated for my liking. I'm hoping they'll start holding things down better this morning so we can avoid that!

    Thanks for the pointers!

YOu can try making your own

Basic recipe: Into four cups of water, stir 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 3 tablespoons sugar. You can use even use some juice mixes with the water if you like for flavor.

    It works well!

OH Andrea, this is what we just went through and you were so supportive. We did end up getting IV fluids and it made a world of difference. DD actually started getting better after she got them. I think it gave her some strength.

    This will pass!

Poor things! I hope it passes soon for you guys. Ugh.

I would try diluted Gatorade (with half water)....I like the Gatorade Rain flavors myself.

:hug99: How are they feeling today? When my girls were sick in November I gave them very watered down Pedialyte (apple flavor) in a sippy and they would only drink the tiniest bit at a time, so I don't have any advice. Just :hug99:

I've also used the unflavored which just looks like plain water. She took it like a champ!

Thanks for all the 'get well' wishes!

Conner seems to be on the upswing. We're alternating formula & Pedialyte bottles and he's kept everything down today. He even took 4 oz formula just now & all is good! He's still got the nasty diapers, but he's definitely wetting...has tears again...is starting to drool again...and is starting to keep his liquids down.

Aiden seems to be about the same (I think he's about 12-20 hrs behind Conner). He's keeping the Pedialyte down, as long as we give it in smaller amounts. He also is continuing with the nasty diapers, but he's still not wetting much. Still not much for tears, no drool, etc. I was going to take him in for IV fluids, but he appears to be holding down his Pedialyte now (last time he didn't was around 5am this morning).

I had spent such time getting the boys on a routine, getting them to STTN, & getting them to play more independently on the floor. Talk about a set back. They did sleep 6pm to 3am, but then were up on & off after then for bottles/soothing/etc. They're napping as they fall during the day (varying 30 mins to 3 hrs) & we've even brought the swing back out that we had packed away! Sometimes they're taking up to 2 bottles an hour, other times they go 4 hours in between them. I hate the uncertainty around here! How long will it be before we can start working back to our routine? I'm thinking it'll take some time, even after they are fully healthy again.

Thanks again for all the advice & support. It means a lot. I work night shift & have been unable to call in sick all week, so I TECHNICALLY haven't had a full night's sleep since last Saturday night. I got a good 4 hr stretch on Monday night, but otherwise I have not slept more than 1 1/2 hrs consecutively since then. I'm exhausted & just WAITING to catch their crud! It's so much fun when all 3 of us feel miserable (ok, they win, but still)!!!

Keep the Get Well Vibes coming our way....we still need them!
