When my girls reflux acted up bigtime, we made an appt. with a pediatric gastroenterologist. We couldn't get one for 6 weeks, and it's next week. The girls are now on prevacid and it's working wonderfully for them. They do still spit up a lot, but they eat well and aren't in pain anymore.

So do you think we should still go? Should I cancel the appt.? I figure in a sense, it wouldn't hurt, but i see no reason to put them through tests as long as they are eating well and not in any discomfort.

    Thanks for your input!

There are always pros and cons, huh?

I would hate to put them through testing as well, since with the meds they are doing much better. If they weren't doing better with meds then I would do the testing...

We had the same issue. I did choose to go to the GI appt after being put on the Prevacid by the Ped. One thing that we changed per the GI was putting 2 teaspoons per ounce of cereal in the bottle instead of one. That helped tremendously. We then scheduled an upper GI that day to be done about 4 weeks from that date and as that date crept closer he was doing so much better that we canceled it. I was able to finally wean him off the cereal and the Prevacid at about 5 months and he is doing great. I still have a 3 month recheck with the GI Dr next month that I will keep just to finish up that follow up. Hope this helps.

I would be tempted to keep the appointment. That way if they start having problems, at least you have your foot in the door as an established patient.

My thoughts exactly. Chances are that if they are doing good on the meds. that the Dr. will take a wait and see how things go approach and not schedule any invasive tests.

I've recently had an experience where my ped told me one thing that once I saw the specialist was completely wrong. Peds are not specialist. They are generalist. Although seeing a specialist is not needed in all cases, it certainly couldn't hurt. You could call and talk to them in the office to see what they think.

Glad your girls are doing better. Shannon

We also had the same issue. We were referred to a GI Specialist by our ped because of the their reflux issues. The Zantac worked well for them so we decided to forego the Specialist. At about 3.5-4 mos we weaned them off the Zantac and now we have no reflux issues.

    Hope that helps!

We go to a GI specialist and my boy never had any tests, just regular check ups. They just keep an eye on him and my GI specialist is actually the one prescribing the Prevacid (my ped prefers to give Zantac and if that doesn't work he feels it's the GI specialist responsibility since they have so much more experience).
