    Hello.

My pediatrician suggested we wait until 2 years of age before giving peanut butter. But I was talking to a friend and she said her doctor said not to give the peanut butter from the jar until age four because of the risk of choking since it's so sticky. Is this true? What other kinds of peanut butter is there? I don't think they'll have allergies to it and was hoping to try some out, to help with lunches! Anyone else heard this before?

    Thanks!

Our ped advised us to wait until 2 for Emilie and Trevor as well. However, for Caroline we have always given her PB from a jar, with her we got the go ahead at 15 months. I've never heard not to give it from the jar. When we first gave her PB I always did a thin layer and just smooth not chunky PB.

Our ped gives the go-ahead for PB at 1 year. I gave it to the twins at 10 or 11 months with no problems.

My doctor hasn't really set a time, she just said it's best to hold off as long as possible. By that, she has always meant (with my other 3) after 1 year, preferably closer to 2 years, hold out for 3 years if you can, just because of the possibility of allergies (I don't think I ever made it to 2 with the other kids). I have never heard of the choking thing. Unless you were planning to give them a great big spoonful right from the jar, which I know you obviously weren't going to do, I don't think it's a huge problem!

Our ped said to hold off as long as we can but also didn't give an exact time. He left that up to us to consider with family allergies, etc.

We decided to wait until at least 3, maybe later.

My boys have been eating PB&J for a while now, probably around a year old...we have no peanut allergies and they had no reaction to it. Their current fav with PB is a whole wheat wrap spread some PB then strawberry jam and then put a slice of banana and roll. They love it.

My ped also said to wait until 2 but I went ahead and tried it anyway at around 16 months (we have no peanut allergies in either side). I know that we are not suppose to give them the chunky kind of pb so we only use the creamy. My girls don't really love it after all the anticipation and concern about should we or shouldn't we try it. Arwen will eat it occassionally. I have done it with lots of jelly and I have made peanut butter and butter sandwhiches. The butter makes it a lot creamier so it's not quite as sticky. I also always have a drink right there for them.

Also, when I decided to finally try the peanut butter, I made sure to do it when I knew dh would be home so that (God forbid) if anything DID happen then he would be there to help.
