do any of you give your twins peanut butter? we have no peanut allergies on either side of the family so I have let them lick some off my finger occasionally and they have had no problems. If you do give them peanut butter, how do you give it to them? tia

I always gave it to my other kids via peanut and jelly sandwiches...broken up in real small pieces.

I didn't give mine any till after 12 mos. but after that I put a REAL thin bit on bread. There are people who don't think you should give kids PB till 3 YEARS! [IMG] But it's because they can develop the allergy..... I would consult their pedi on this matter for sure. I know you have no history, but just to be safe....

We have not given peanut butter yet. With my oldest we got the go ahead from the pedi at 15 months. When we went for the twins 1 year appt. they have now changed that to 2 years. We, my DH and I, don't have any peanut allergies, but my sister is allergic to peanuts, although she had peanuts all her life and found out in her 20's, but pedi didn't ask about that. I think more pedi.s are saying to wait longer due to all the peanut allergies now. It's kind of scary how many people have peanut allergies. I have never known anyone to give it before 1. So no, we have not given peanut butter yet.

they say to wait two years- first year is for allergies, and the second year is because it is a choking hazard (people give it to kids in lumps, causing them to choke)

I would wait too. We waited until our DS needed to eat a sandwich at lunchtime, I think that was about 18 months. I remember he was talking a lot (so maybe 2). We have no allegries either.

At our one year appointment, our pediatrician gave us the go ahead on all foods except peanut butter (or anything really in that food family).

I waited till a year(no family allergies) and either give it on a spoon(where they have to suck it off) or very thinly on bread. Jessy has a secret addiction to Reese's cup [IMG]

They can develope an allergy so we didnt go there for 2 years. But the more scary element is that PB is the top choking food (after hot dogs) if put on bread it rolls into large balls in the childs mouth and the PB acts as a glue sort of to the roof of their mouths... this happened once to me actually and I had to dig out the bread with my finger... so that scares me worse than the allergy.

Our ped says 3 years. I'm going to wait till at least 2.

Even though you have already let them have some and they've had no problems, I would probably stop giving it to them if I were you. Repeated exposure at a young age can make allergies more likely.

Our pedi said 18 months. At our 18 month appt, he gave us the go ahead with pb. We have no family history of food allergies. If we had, he would have recommended to wait until 3 years old.

The first time I gave it was just a little bit on crackers early in the day. I was paranoid about having to rush them off to the drs, so I wanted it to be during the daytime. I kept a close eye on them for a few hours, but they were completely fine. I have heard of people putting a dab on the back of the upper arm to see if there is a skin sensitivity. If you get a skin reaction, there is a good chance you will also get a reaction from ingesting it. We didn't try that, but I have heard it a few times on TS and from some other friends.

I never thought about giving it to them when they were little, or I might have tried... since mine weren't ever allergic to anything.

I didn't give it to mine until after a year of age when I gave them crackers with PB.

My doctor just told us today that we should wait until they are 12 months old.

Whoa! Guess I need to be more careful on this one. Didn't realize it's potential danger. I will not give it to them and will speak to the ped at their 12 month appt. Thanks for all your responses.

There was a case of very bad allergy reaction on a 1-5 board - really scary. They did not have any history of peanut allergy either. Be careful.
