peanut Butter - what age did your little one have it?

Livi is 13 months old and I really want to give her peanut butter. The twins have a PB and J with marshmallow fluff probably 2 times a week and at those times I have to make something else for livi and it's annoying!

The twins had it at 18 months with no problems. Was planning on waiting until 2 years, but the sitter gave it to them at 18 months since she thought I had already.

We have no allergies to food in the family, so I'm wondering if anyone has given it at 12-15 months??

My DH gave it to the girls very early - I want to say it was before 12 months even. I wasn't exactly happy when I found out, but he didn't know not to give them peanut butter. No one has any allergies so it turned out okay. They enjoy PB&J sandwiches.

Ours had PBJ sandwiches at 12 months. They love them, but they're too messy for them, LOL. Anyway, I felt comfortable giving this to them since they've had zero food allergies before then. HTH :).

With our oldest DD our ped gave the go ahead at 15 months. We still see the same ped now, and he has changed his age for this. He now says to wait until age 2 to give peanut butter, even with no food allergies in the family. We have no food allergies in the family and we gave the twins it at age 2.

I gave it to the girls when they were 12 months. We have no food allergies and the ped said they could have it. Now it is one of their favorite things.

Somewhere between 12 and 15 months you should put a little dab of peanut butter on her cheek. If redness and/or swelling develops make an appointment with an allergist. If no redness or swelling develops, the next day you can put a little on her lip. If she doesn't have a negative reaction, you can give her a bit of peanut butter on a cracker or something. If all of this happens without incident, enjoy peanut butter with your daughter!!

I did at 12 months, no allergy problems except at first they did not like it. Just recently they started to take a shine to it. Good luck and let us know how Livi makes out!

I still haven't, but I want to! I'm trying to be a good girl and follow the rules of the AAP which say not until 2, but I feel I may give in soon....they deserve it!

I gave them their first taste at 10 months and now they have PB sandwiches cut up into little squares. I also ate lots of it when I was pregnant.

You know, I was given my first peanut butter taste at 19 :D I don't like it, so not really in any hurry to give some to them (plus dh only buys the cheap kind and if I give them some it will be natural).

We waited until age 2 with my older DD and then when the boys went in for their 2 year old WBV I asked about it and she said now AAP recommends the age of 3 not only due to allergies but because of a choking hazard. So I was going to wait until 3 but I was eating an Uncrustable one day and Derek really wanted a bite. So I gave it to him  I gave it 4 days in a row on crackers and they both loved it. :pardon:

Our ped said 1yr for pb and 2 yr for honey. Well, DH gave them both the day after their first bday. Now they won't eat pb&j only pb&honey. Sigh. I can see how it can be a choking hazard, but we layer it very thinly.

We have peanut allergies in the family (DH's parents) so I had intended to wait until 18-24 mos. However, they got it at their last daycare at 14 mos since their policy was that it was allowed in children over 12 mos (our current daycare is nut free due to a child with an allergy). They love it & have had zero problems with it.

That being said, I recently have heard about new studies coming out about PB. Obviously, PB is a choking hazard & I can understand waiting for that, but to wait for allergies is starting to be disproven. Now, that's not in HIGH RISK children, which the AAP still recommends you wait til 3 yrs old for.

Here's one article from Babycenter about this from Nov 2008. I KNOW I just read an article in Parents magazine, but I cannot find it online. That article said that kids are 10 times MORE likely to develop a peanut allergy if they are NOT exposed at an early age. It's frustrating how that contradicts most everything you hear from Pediatricians lately, so who do you believe???

I'm not trying to spark a debate, I'm just letting you know some of the new literature out there. Ultimately, I think it's the parents' comfort level. As I said, even though we were given the 'go ahead' for PB at 9mos, I still had intended on waiting. However, now that I've read the new literature, I'm not sure what I would've done. Overall, it's a scary thing, that's for sure!!!!

We've given it 2 times so far after they turned 1. I did hear that sometimes it takes a few times before you even notice they are allergic. So far no problems.

We haven't given it yet .... I was just waiting till 2, cause I thought thats what I was supposed to do! haha ... First time mom and all.

We want to give it to them now, but I heard it's messy, so I'm waiting for a bath night! Maybe tonight!

BOTH my older girls are alergic to all nuts, so we will wait till the twins are 5 before introducing any nuts.

We gave our girls peanut butter at 14 months after getting the go-ahead from the pediatrician. There are no food allergies in either of our families so we never expected to have problems. On Piper's fourth exposure she had a fairly severe reaction - swelling around her face and obvious itchiness. She was not in any danger, just a lot of discomfort. We rushed to the doctors, where they gave her Benadryl and monitored her for several hours to make sure the reaction didn't get worse. We had both girls allergy tested after that and learned that Piper has a level 3 (on a scale of 0 - 7) peanut allergy.

I'm writing this so any of you out there that haven't yet tried peanuts know that the allergy develops AFTER the first exposure, usually on the third, fourth or fifth exposure. Knowing what I know now, I still would have tried peanuts at 14 months. I don't think waiting until 16 months, 18 months, or 24 months would have made a difference. She has an allergy and that means she'd have it no matter when we tried peanuts (according to the pediatric allergist). But I would have been more careful to watch my girls for allergic reactions the second, third, and fourth time after they had peanuts before I thought I was in the clear.

With Nadia we waited until age 2, but with these little guys we tried PB at 18 months, after the go-ahead from the ped. Like Tricia mentioned, we watched them very carefully every time they were exposed subsequently.

I have so many friends who have kids with peanut allergies, which can range from simply annoying for the mild ones, to very scary for the life-threatening ones. I've actually read some research recently that they'll find a "cure" within the next 5 years or so....which is encouraging!

Yes, we did at 13-14 months. Their brother always had it, so I gave them some. Loved it. No trouble. I did wait with first born 2 years tho.
