I know they recommend not doing it the first year, but mine are nearly 11 months and I want to give them PB&J. Would this be ok to try? I want to mix it up a bit for them...neither myself or my husband have peanut allergies in our families.

    Thoughts?

I avoided it. My dh has a slight peanut allergy. I knew a kid who had to go to the doctor after his second encounter with peanut butter. No peanut allergies in that family. Good luck.

before you give it to them to eat, wipe a small amount on their skin.. maybe an area on their back? if after an hour theres no reaction, then try giving it to them. we did this with our first, neither of us had peanut allergies and thankfully he didnt either. Same with my sister and her first, except he had a skin reaction to the pb. Hes been getting almond butter since 9 months. remember to use a very small amount, on skin and on food, as its thick and they can have issues swallowing.

We introduced nuts at about seven months and since then have been consistently keeping them in their diet. It was quite by accident they were exposed to peanuts at that age but once it happened, we haven't looked back. I hope that helps you decide.

I am a by the book parent ( ) I waited until my kids were over the age of 2 to offer peanut butter or products with peanut butter in them. Peanut butter can be a choking hazard. And if they were to have a reaction, I would rather them be an older toddler then an older baby. KWIM? And remember, just because they dont have a reaction the first time they try it doesnt mean that one wont come after the 3, 4 , or 5th exposure.

Our pedi okayed it at 1 year, and we gave it around 13 months? No issues here.

My literature from the Ped's office said they could have thinned peanut butter from 8-10 months and peanut butter from 10-12 months. I actually read an article in Parents Magazine about a study that said your child was less likely to develop a peanut allergy if you introduced peanut butter before their first birthday. I introduced it at 11 months and they love it! It is one of their favorite meals.
