i was just wondering if you all started peanut butter right at 12 months or saw a reason to wait longer? I was thinking of starting it soon and with all the allergies to peanuts these days, have not.
There is no histroy of peanut allergy in our family.

I think it was just a little after 12 months... not exactly sure when, but not long after.

I gave them Cheese and PB crackers... they LOVED them! Had no reactions.

I started after discussing it with the pedi at their 15 month appt. We have no history of food allergies in our family and the boys haven't had a problem with any foods yet. They aren't really crazy about peanut butter yet but they do like it in cookies or very lightly spread on toast.

I think we tried it at 18 months, but neither of our kids liked it. We've tried it a few more times, but they still won't touch it.

At our one year appt. we were told to wait until 2 years old. With my oldest DD we got the go ahead to start at 15 months, but I think now the pedi is saying to wait longer because of all the peanut allergies out there.

Did your pedi say anything about it at their one year appt.?

I didn't ask at the appt.

Our ped follows the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines of waiting until they are at least 3 years old before trying peanut butter. I've never met anyone who waited that long. We tried it around two and a half after they accidently were served a small amount during a party. They did just fine.

I've heard that it's a good idea to just rub some on their faces before letting them eat it. Then wipe it off (not sure how long) and wait a day to see if a rash appears. I think it's a great idea rather than risk a serious reaction.

We tried it- had no history of reactions in the family and we are allergic- very allergic. NOw have to carry epi pens and when we went to our allergist- he said his recommendation is at least wait until 2.

That makes me wonder if it's better to try it before they have it elsewhere by accident....

Mine had it for the first time at 11 1/2 months. They "stole" some leftover sandwiches. By the time we realized what they were eating, it was finished. Fortunately, we don't have any allergies in the family and were OK. Now it is a favorite lunch!

I was encouraged to wait until 2 years. No history of allergies here either.

My first 3 we did it at 1 year with no problems. Well suprise when we tried the twins. Maddox had 1 bite of a peanut butter cracker and BAM hives. Then a few days later he had a honey nut cheerio and BAM hives. He has tree nut allergies too. So just be prepared and watch closely.

Our Pedi said "try it! If they're allergic to it at 3yrs old, they're allergic to it now, no need to wait!"

He did say the problem is finding a safe way to eat it as it's SO thick, so on crackers is probably safest.

Wow, all peds are different I guess. Mine said the exact opposite -- by starting it earlier rather than later, you actually increase the chance that they will develop an allergy. If they have no exposure to it until their immune system is more developed, it (the immune system) is less likely to overreact.

Our ped follows the AAP recommendations, so he is saying 3 years. I will probably wait till 2 at least, even though we have no allergies (and it's getting really annoying not to be able to give them nuts of any kind).

My ped told us at 12month checkup that we could try it if we want to. I've opted to wait, simply because that's one allergy that I'm afraid of. I've heard so many people have to make so many changes to their diet and be so careful and can still have very bad reactions due to accidental exposures. I'm probably waiting until 2ish. heck My son's only had it a couple of times, no reactions, he's just not crazy about it.

Very good advice. We found out that Danielle was allergic because of the reaction she got from it touching her skin. She never went into a full blown allergic reaction. She was 12 months old and had it a few times and then all of a sudden the reaction on her face whereever it touched. She didn't have any again until 2 1/2 years old and she hasn't had a problem since. Her pedi said that if it went to allergic reaction that she will never outgrow it so if she could wait she will possible outgrow the allergy which she did luckily!

My boys are allergic to eggs. Our pedi told us not to do PB until at least three. Apparently, if you're allergic to one thing, it increases your risk of being allergic to another. BTW, we have NO history of allergies in our family, but the boys are highly allergic to eggs. We were very surprised, and it's been a huge hassel. So, I DO plan on waiting unti 3, or even longer. I would rather wait than chance anything happening.
