Hello to everyone in twinstuff

I am relieved to have finally found a thread for twins.

After a long battle with infertility conceived via IVF.I have PCOS and has been on Metformin for more than 3 yrs now(1500 mg a day) .
The perinatologist has asked me stop my Met after the first trimester cold turkey.Iam mortified to stop Met since its a security blanket.
Does anyone in TS has a similar experience? How did the body respond after stopping MET?

    Thanks

I also have PSOS I have taken Metformin with my pregnancy, yet my dr has kept me on it my entire pregnancy. I stopped taking it after I delivered the baby or babies. Why does he want you to stop taking it after the first trimester? I was told to stay on it to help with not getting gestational diabeties.

I too have PCOS and have been taking 1000 mg a day for the last 3 years since being diagnosed with PCOS & Infertility. When I got pregnant with my twins through IVF and was sent to my Perinatologist he advised me to continue to stay on it throughout my pregnancy to prevent Gestational Diabetes.

I would check around on that... it makes sense to continue to stay on it. Women with PCOS, as well as women who are pregnant with twins, have a much higher risk of getting GD than other pregnant women!

I will tell you I went on vacation once a few years ago and stopped Metformin cold turkey (on accident) and I was fine until I got back home and started taking it again and let's just say I had the WORST bouts of diahhreah (sorry for the TMI) for the first couple of days. One time I thought I was going to die on the toilet!!! So I don't know about stopping cold turkey if there's a chance you'll get back on it again!

My RE told me to stop at 12 weeks - I didn't... it freaked me out... My OB gave me another script for it.. it all depends on the doctor. tell them you are too nervous - they might lower your dosage, but keep you on it for peace of mind.

Whatever you do - don't stop it before the end of the first trimester - I swear I have my kids today because I stayed on it. I have had a ton of m/cs and I went off of it at a BFP each time. My daughter and these twins - stayed on it.

    good luck!

:wavey: and welcome to Twinstuff!! Congrats on your twins.  I hope you have a very happy and healthy pregnancy. We look forward to getting to know you. I too have PCOS and went through infertility but was never on Met, so I'm sorry I have no advice. I do hope your doctor listens and takes your concerns seriously.

Add me to the pcos and IF treatments, altho my twins are from gonal-f injects and IUI.

My RE now recommends you stay on met for the whole pregnancy, especially when there is multiples or you have a higher risk of GD (I have insulin resistance). So when I brought it up to my OB he reluctantly admitted that there are some studies showing it can reduce the risk of developing GD. I stayed on the full dose (1500mg) until about 19 wks when I couldn't handle the side effects anymore, then dropped it down to one pill, or 750 mgs a day. I'm still on that dosage now and passed my 3 hr GTT just fine.

I did go off at 12 wks with my daughter and didn't have GD with her either, so either way I think you would be fine!

Congrats on the twins and :welcome: to TwinStuff!!
