I got the results from the pathology test done on my placenta. It was indeed one placenta. The lady I spoke to said there are absolutely NO signs of fusion. Blood vessels ran the whole length of the placenta. She said that the boys def had TTTS and she was surprised I was made to go to 37 weeks. So I guess I have my answer

That's crazy! I would still test in your case though that eye color thing is like a one in a million thing. Do you have any more pics??

I guess that answers your question about the membrane too, huh?

that eye color thing will be neat to watch as they get older and the color settles.

Yes it certainly does! I asked about the eye colour, and they told me it does happen. It's rare but it does happen.

I would still get the DNA test done. I think they look quite different. Usually I can tell by the eyebrows and their's looks different.

OH MAN! That is a tough one! I have no idea!! Their teeth, too! WAYYYY different! Did one take a pacifier and one didn't? You must never mix those 2 up, right?

The one where they are laying in the crib they DO look identical but LOTS of babies do. I have fraternal twin brothers who looked EXACTLY the same as babies, I still mix them up as infants!

This is a tough tough tough case. This is the toughest yet!

You really need to test them.

And FYI the birthmark thing is really irrelevant. That is a total fluke!

    XO

This is just soooo interesting! They are soo super cute, too!

Then I kind of looked at them again and they DO look a lot alike! I think they are identical w/ many differences. Very cool! Def the type that cannot trick their girlfriends LOL!!

Have to say I have never really mixed them up. The only two times I ever did was halloween. Once when they were crawling away from me. THought I was chassing William, picked him up and it was Nathaniel. They wore the same costume. The other time was the same day. I thought it was Nathaniel from the side profile, nope it was William!

So hard to tell...I agree that they look a LOT alike in the pic of them in the crib but some of the ones where they are older not so much. I love the one where they are bundled up in the stroller together, so sweet! The eye colour still throws me...it will be so intersting to see what happens with that! They are adorable, there's no doubt about that :)

Do they look a lot like your older one or more like each other?

The loook a lot like D. It's crazy how much they look like him. If you see a pic of the three of them together, there is no doubt that they are brothers.

That is a tough one! FWIW our path report came back as one placenta too and our girls are definitely frat (one redhead one brunette) so it does happen occasionally that it fuses so early that it looks like a single placenta. We never did any testing on them but there's no way they are ID. Your guys sure are cuties!!

Ya, see.. that's what I'm saying, that placenta thing is not a foolproof test :)

Let me ask you this, when you had your 9 week u/s done, were they in one black hole or 2 black holes??

  19. HorseyLover

To me they look absolutely ID. I can see the differences, but it just looks like the same child with different color eyes and maybe weight distributed a little differently. It is the same thing with my boys - they are ID but you can see differences.

I can tell who's who in each photo no problem. I would be surprised if they were ID.

They were in 1 black hole.

So hard to tell. They look different in some pics but identical in others. I recently read an article about babies' eye color changing well past one year of age, so maybe that will happen with your boys. My boys have blue eyes but DH and I do not so we keep waiting for them to change.

My situation is similar to yours - mono di boys that look like brothers, but not identical to me. Only one placenta for us too and although I was never diagnosed with TTTS our pathology report showed that one twin was getting about 60 percent of blood supply and the other got 40 percent. They were a pound different in size and are still about 10 oz. apart. But, I will say that others often get them mixed up, even grandmas who know them well, and especially in pictures so I think maybe it's just us as parents who see two totally different kids.

People who dont see them everyday do mixed them up. William was a little over a pound smaller then NAthaniel. They are now close in weight but it took awhile for him to catch up.

In some pics I say "Oh totally ID" then others? not so much! Wow - amazing tho. I almost think they look TOO much alike to NOT be ID...kwim?

And just as an offside, Shera - you said neither you nor DH have blue eyes - do you have blue eyes in the family and do you or DH have green or hazel eyes?

chaoticmom I know exactly what you mean. I have pics were I am like wow they are the same kid and others not so much. I am finding though, that the older they get the more they look alike.

I have green eyes and my husband has hazel. Isn't green supposed to be a mutation of blue? I thought it was and said that to a friend and she disagreed.

That’s interesting (and very frustrating) about the pathology report. Sorry Slipper, I thought once you had the results you would be closer to your answer, I guess I was wrong.

Maybe we should start a fund to help you get your DNA test, lol. I think we’re all baffled by this one and would LOVE to know the results (none more that you I’m sure). I showed the pics to DH last night and even he said frat although he did agree they looked a lot alike. He noticed the eyes and the chins right away. I think it can be hard with picture though...you are capturing a moment and an expression and no 2 people are ever going to be the same in that respect even if they are ID. I know we have pictures of the girls where they look very different and others where they are carbon copies.

On the blue eye aside...both my girls have blue eyes and DS’s were blue until about 18 months when they changed to an interested blue/grey/green mix. DH and I have brown, as does everyone in our immediate family except for my Mom who’s green. Genetics are an interesting thing!

Well then that is the definitive answer!

If they were in one black hole, they ARE identical. No ifs ands or buts!

Can you post your 9 week u/s photo?

If they were in one black "hole" that means it IS one placenta. They are identical!

    There is your answer.

    Wow!

That is just nuts! I think you have a cool situation there! I'd love for you to post pics as they grow!

I dont have it anymore. When I left the boys father, I forgot some things there while I was packing. The earlier U/S were one of them. I have asked for them back and he has refused. I had 3 early U/S though, and all three there was only 1 black hole

Here is definite identical ultrasound : link 1

and here is di di ultrasound: *2 black holes*

    link 2

So you can DEFINITELY tell if there were 2 black holes or one indicating one placenta or two. IF they were in one black "hole" as the first ultrasound shows, then there is NO question- they ARE identical!

Here's an explanation of why one could have a different chin than the other.

and here is an explanation of how eye colour could work. My understanding is that blue is recessive to other colours, so it's possible that you both passed on some recessive blue genes.

It's possible they're ID, but for some reason (maybe the TTTS?) have a different expression of certain genes. It seems plausible to me that if they had different access to resources in the womb that it could have affected the expression of their genes? That's lazy armchair science though

I don't know if you've seen the recent news about the first set of semi identical twins being proven. It's still one egg, but is fertilized by TWO sperms. So they get the same exact genes from you, but different genes from the dad since it's two seperate sperm. To DNA test for that, you need all four of your dnas.

Interesting isnt it though? I had them out yesterday and I was asked how I tell them apart. My aunt also called me yesterday, I had sent her a pic, and she was calling to ask who was who.
