Ok, if you were feeling like you might be parent of the year.. you won't.. i got it in the bag! I totally locked my boys in the car in the kroger parking lot! I strapped them in, and while i was strapping luke in, jack was playing with my keys (which my mom gave him [IMG]) and i guess he pushed the lock button at some point. Anyway, i drive an '03 suburban and i guess it has some lock safety feature (although no so safe for me!) that the doors wont lock until they are all shut, even if you push the lock button on the keyless entry. Well, i took my keys from jack and tossed them in the front seat, tossed my purse in, and shut the doors and walked around to the driver side. I heard the doors lock, and freaked out.. i thought to myself "does he still have my keys??" "No, i took them!" But i looked in his lap anyway, thinking i would some how coax my 1 year old son to "push the red button, jack jack" Seriously, sleep deprived momma [IMG]. Anyway, he didn't have them and i looked, and sure enough, they were in my seat where i tossed them. Along with my purse and cell phone!! Thank God, my mom had met us there and i used her phone to call my dh. I told him to call the fire department, because i think they do it for free. Well, in the mean time, i remember we have a mechanic friend at church with a slim jim so i call him and he is on his way... i call my dh back and tell him nevermind on the fire dept.. TOO LATE! They said it was protocall to have to send someone when children are involved. So as i am waiting in the parking lot for my friend, and playing peek-a-boo with my kids through the window (and it is raining) i hear a siren. Thats right, you guessed it, an ambulance pulls in.. then 2 minutes later, another siren.. yep.. firetruck. THEN, one more siren, and a cop drives up. There wasn't a hole big enough for me at that point [IMG]. I'm like. "seriously, guys, we're ok.. my friend is coming" Oh no no no, they all stand around doing nothing, and now the sirens have upset the boys and now they are crying. great. My friend arrives, and cannot get it open, and then a wrecker drives up and is going to try!! Seriously, could i be more embarrased?? the answer is "yes" a friend from church joins the already growing crowd of people standing around wondering "what happened!" So now, this is no longer a "funny family story" it will inevitabley make the sermon on sunday..lol. The police officer comes up and tells me that i should carry an extra set of keys with me in my purse... (thanks barney fife) i pointed to my purse in the front seat and said "see that bag, right there?... extra set inside" ANYWAY... after about 25 minutes the wrecker driver got it unlocked (free of charge) and everyone went on there merry way.. seriously, i was waiting on the news helicopter at any second. So, mom soaking wet from standing in the rain and 2 screaming kids later, we got home safe and sound. Needless to say jack doesn't get mom's keys anymore. And that is why i will be awarded the parent of the year award! [IMG]

**glad i could make y'all smile [IMG]
Actually, i was laughing while it was happening.. it was much better than freaking out!! My sister locked her kids in the car a few summers ago (genetics??) and totally freaked, so i thought i would take a different route! But you know with twins, ya gotta have a sense of humor! [IMG]

We tie for that award. I did a very similar thing last summer..... yes, summer, and it was hot. Fortunately, the car was in the shade & it was RUNNING!
We were in the middle of moving. I have an '01 Suburban, It also has a similar safety feature where the drivers door can't lock if the keys are in the ignition. This feature does not work if you press the lock button in the hatch-back!! I put the kids in the car while I added the last couple of things in the back. Anyway, something fell & pushed a toy up against the lock & locked all the doors.
Fortunately, the first place I called was able to get there in about 5 minutes and he didn't even charge me because their were kids involved!

If it makes you feel any better, I did the same thing in my driveway on the way to my daughters 15 month well visit this fall. I have a Town & Country with the automatic sliding doors. Well, I used the button on the keys to slide the door open to put her in, threw my keys on the front seat and closed her door. Well, since I had only slid her door open using the automatic button and closed it the same way the car never unlocked. I had to call the fire dept and they came out and got it open. The worst part was calling the peds office to tell them we would be late because I locked her in the car! [IMG]

I know it wasn't funny at the time, but at least you can look back and get a good chuckle out of it. Glad everyone made it through the ordeal.

Well, I just did something very similar as well! Freezing (about 28 deg outside) and car running with purse/cell etc inside! Thank God the boys were at home with DH. [IMG]

I was at my local twins club/church picking up food baskets to deliver for Christmas.

It was in a 05 Navigator. By the next week, I went and got a new car, it freaked me out so bad!

I am so glad that all ended well, "Mommy of the Year!" Yeah, I did my "stunt" in 06, so I wouldnt have qualified! [IMG]

Oh now that is funny. I got a good laugh out of Barney five. ha ha. I know what you are saying about everyone being sent out for small things. I guess they have nothing better to do. I am glad everyone is okay.

Good news is that you managed to pick a good time in Texas to learn this lesson. My MIL managed to lock my boys in when they were younger in the middle of summer. Luckily the car and AC were running. Of course MIL had my keys, and DH has the only other set. He had to come home from work (probably a 30min drive) to let them out. I was on my way home from a class and the boys were fine until they saw mommy and couldn't get to her. My doors auto lock when you drive it (locks around 20mph) so when she got out with the car still running she hadn't hit the unlock button and grazed the door lock on the driver's side as she got out. We never called for back up knowing that they were safe in the car and DH was on the way. I am sure 911 has a protocol they have to follow when kids are locked in. Amblance was there in case they had medical issues (like being locked in there for a long period of time), police there in case you left them there the whole time you were shopping in the middle of summer (gotta file them neglect charges), and the fire fighters to break out the window when the wreckers can't get the door open. I would be happy to know that everyone responds rapidly when kids are involved. If it would have just been your keys were locked in, you probably wouldn't have even gotten the cops out to help. I am glad everyone is okay.

You are great at storytelling! It was a hilarious story, but I'm sure it was horrifying at the time. I'm thankful that it all worked out for ya...I'd be interested in hearing about whether or not it ends up in the sermon on Sunday!!

When my dd was just a few months old I thought that I had done this... thankfully it was just a scare and the driver side door was unlocked... anyway it scared me enough that I am very parinoid about keeping my keys in my pocket until I get in the driver's side... I will even leave our automatic sliding door opened until I get in... then just push the button to close it... so even with keeping my keys I'm still parinoid about it...

I have done this three times!!!
The first was when I was 6 mos pg with the twins at the mall. My oldest at the time decided to get out by way of the trunk while I was getting out the stroller for my at the time 20 mo old ds. I closed the trunk and looked in the car to see ds out of his carseat running around inside the van (dd had unbuckled him for me) and he hit the lock button. Went to grab my purse and realized it was on driver seat with my keys and cell phone inside. I was stranded in the parking lot and didn't have a cell phone. My ils were inside the mall waiting for me. I don't know their cell phone by heart so couldn't call it. Found a guy walking by and asked if I could use his phone to call the police. They sent the fire truck, ambulance, 2 cops and mall security. After about an hour of them trying to get in the car the fire fighters coerced my son into pushing the lock up. When they opened the door it was obvious my son spent his time wisely by pooping and the whole car stunk!!! The second time and third time was in my driveway. I had the car running and ds strapped in his seat belt. I called my car dealership to get another key made (dh was out of town) and they said "sure just bring in the key and we will copy it)...I said "its in the ignition of my car where my son is locked in) so they said "okay just drive over here and we will make a copy"....obviously they didnt' get the seriousness of my situation. But got it worked out....

We have all been there and feel sooo stupid when it happens but its always reasurring to hear its happened to others too!
