Pain relief after a c-section?

I thought I'd post this over here where someone might have gone through this already.

    There's a great chance that I'll have a c-section.

I've been thinking about pain management after the section. I've always had a problem with swallowing large pills...I simply cannot do it. Crushing them is just NASTY, so I don't think that's a good alternative either.

I was wondering if anyone else has this issue? If so, what did you do for pain management after your c section? I wonder if I could get morphine in my IV afterwards? I don't think Lortab comes in a liquid form, does it? I hope someone will know.

I'm just freaking out about how I'll manage the pain afterwards where I can't swallow pills. It sucks! LOL!

They have all sorts of pain relievers in liquid form, so I would just talk to your dr. about it. Good luck!

After my c-section I alternated medicines between Tylenol 3 and Motrin. That seemed to manage my pain just fine and the pills were not large by any means. I have issues swallowing medicine also, but was able to handle those fine. I would talk to your OB at your next appointment and go over what their standard pain meds are and if there are liquid alternatives. Better to get it noted on your chart now, rather than have to deal with it in the hospital.

I took Tylenol 3 after I stopped the IV drop. Then went to regular Tylenol and Motrin. I believe Percecet (sp) is a small pill, too. I don't think you will have to worry about it. Good luck!

I had morphine in my iv. My iv was in for 4 or 5 days (its a bit of a blur!) because I was on antibiotics.

Make sure you put the pill on the tip of your tongue and then take a large sip of water. This help to make a funnel effect, it will slide right down typically and you won't feel a thing. I know a lot of people just pop the pill in their mouth and then it just kinda hangs out. That is one option. Also right after you will still be in the hospital so it is when you are home that you need to think about. Just be completely open with your doc and tell him/her your concerns.

Lortab, Morphine, Hydrocodone, and Tylenol 3 all come in liquid forms. I am a infant/toddler nurse and that is all we give :) Just tell the nurses ahead of time that you don't do well with pills-you don't want to wait until you are in pain to find out that they don't have any in their floor stock and have to order it up from pharmacy which can take forever. You also may want to find out beforehand if the pharmacy you use carries it so you are not running around trying to fill your scripts with 2 new babies!! Don't worry you have a lot of pain control options these days. Good luck!!
