    Hi,

    I'm new here :)

I'm 20 week pregnant with twins (a boy and a girl) and I have a terrible pain at the top on my ribs on the left side. My Dr says this is normal. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to relieve some of the pain??

Oh you poor thing! Not to be Debbie Downer but my didnt get better until I delivered...it got worse and worse, that was seriously my only complaint! I think I had a dislocated rib because baby A was all up in there the whole time!
I really hope for your sake that this is just a little expansion pain...and it goes away!

I had surface nerve-like pain under my right breast in the rib area that was really awful with my twins. The only thing that really releived it was ben-gay or icy-hot, because it sort of masked the pain. I still have numbness in that area and it's starting to get painful again, now that I'm on my 33rd week of my second pregnancy, so I don't know what else to try, but that really did seem to help a little, albeit stinkiness was a factor :).

I had pain in my ribs around that time too [mostly on my right side]. It got better after a few weeks. The doc said it was fine and didn't tell my 'why' it was hurting. I just assumed it was cause my tummy was growing rapidly at that point and my cartilage needed to expand to make more room for all of the 'baby', lol.

Sorry, I don't have any suggestions for the pain/discomfort though.. I think I just 'complained' my way through it.

    I'm with the pp's (unfortunately).
I had burning pain under my ribs and the doc said it was nerve pain from all the stretching. I would lather it up with lotion and then blow on it. That gave me some temporary relief from the burning. Sitting up and leaning back as far as I could with my hands over my head helped for a few weeks but otherwise, I'm sorry to say, that pain may be with you until you deliver. It was for me.

Mine grew so painful & unbearable that I was put on Percocet for my final 3 weeks. I had large babies, tho, (8.9# each) so hopefully yours will not get to that level. Good luck...twin pregnancies are difficult but just wait until you meet your twinkies, you will be ecstatic. Take care.

31+4 today, and I'm right there with you - pain under my ribs - especially on the right. My doctor said it might be my gallbladder getting squished. (And promptly told me to try to cut out fat - hmm, I can't have carbs anymore, and now no fat? I'll live with the pain, otherwise, I wont be able to eat!)

It gets worse when I sleep on that side, or when I'm sitting up straight (like at work - which I'm done with this week, thank goodness!)

I could see/feel baby B's body up under my right ribs, I used to massage her down a little and it actually helped for me to lay on my right side b/c it put pressure/support to that side.

I am 24 weeks today and I have had it for the past 2 weeks. It really hurts, and there is nothing that can be done unless you deliver- hang in there. I try to stay on my right side when it hurts (it is on the left) but then that hurts too so I just keep switching!

I've got a baby that is transverse in my ribs (and has been since around 20 weeks). My doctor pointed out a few things. A few weeks ago, he pointed out that my ribs were now like bucket handles and being pulled up towards my shoulders because of where the boys are and the weight. He sent me to a chiropractor. Then when I complained that the pain hadn't changed last week and they found the boys STILL in my ribs, they sent me to an orthopedist and told me to do pelvic tilts on all fours. The orthopedist has discovered that I have a dislocated rib and three brused ribs! So we're REALLY trying to motivate the boys to move. And I don't do well on pain meds, so I'm just on Tylenol for it. Here's what I have found that works

    1. Super-loose bras (you can get little expanders in most sewing sections because you'll need an extra 2 inches at one hour and only 1 inch the next hour, seriously)
    2. Standing with my feet shoulder-width apart and trying to reach the top of the door frame (this works for me because I'm 5'8 to start with... if you are shorter/taller, you'll need to find something else to stretch to that can give you a little support).
    3. Soft support around your ribs while sleeping. (I took a king size pillow case and filled it with the softest filling I could find in the sewing section and then closed up the end with velcro so that I could change out the amount of filling in it.)
    4. All fours pelvic tilts.
    5. Pregnancy Thi Chi or Yoga (I prefer yoga) stretches... boy, it helps.
    6. Warm baths/showers (not hot)
    7. Keeping busy... this helps more to keep my mind off of it and give the boys something to do (by me moving) instead of try to climb my spine. :)

Good luck. It hurts. And it may or may not go away. And it may or may not get worse. Keep telling your doctor, especially if it gets worse.

    Hugs,
    Dominique

Good advice! My girl is tranverse up in my ribs too and I think i'll try out some of your tips! I'm now wearing tube top instead of bra cos I find that they give more space then bra.
