no, I would not, it is not safe according to Dr. Thomas Hale the foremost researcher on the subject. It would be better to use benedryl for sleep, can you take that? Even ambien is considered safer!

    Eek! OK, I'll stay away.

I'm surprised it's such a no-no - isn't it class A in pregnancy? (I was taking it throughout my pregnancy for morning sickness.) What makes a drug safe during pregnancy and risky while nursing?

And btw, thank you for such a quick reply! You rock my world! :)

Wow! I know my clinic advises that it is safe during pregnancy. I would have thought that it would have been safe while nursing! I'll keep that in mind! :) Thanks Kristi! So glad you are here!

Here is some of what I found:

Doxylamine is an antihistamine that is used not only as an antiemetic, but also as a hypnotic and in cough and common cold preparations. The molecular weight of doxylamine succinate, about 389, is low enough that passage into breast milk should be expected. The effects on a nursing infant, if any, are unknown, but sedative and other antihistamine actions are a potential concern. The manufacturer of at least one doxylamine preparation states that the drug is contraindicated during nursing

Basic info on drugs in breastmilk: http://neonatal.ttuhsc.edu/lact/drugentrypage.html

But I see your point about pg vs lactation! I think it has to do with two things:
    1. when in utero mom takes care of getting rid of waste/drugs, but when they are drinking your milk they then need to process those meds themselves.
    2. there are no studies with unisom in lactating women and since we know it is sedating we recommend caution, and since it is not a highly needed drug (like antibiotics, etc) it is most likely not be studied or recommended (risk vs benefit)

    Does that make sense?
