Hello. My girls are 5 weeks old. Sometimes I see them sucking on their tongues, or crying and smacking their lips together [when I know they recently ate]. I try to give them their binki's, but they usually just gag, spit them out and cry even harder. There are times [very few] that they actually take the thing and then their fine, but they need some convincing.

My question is.. How long was it until your babies started taking the pacifier? I think it would help them feel better [and stop crying] some of the times.

    Thanks!

Mine seemed to take them right away, in the hospital sometimes. We used the soothies brand that the hospital gave us at first. Now I'm wishing we weren't giving them so often back then, because we're stuck getting up all night re-inserting them now. Maybe if yours really don't like them, you're luckier than you think!

I didn't think about it that way [being lucky]. I guess if they don't take them now, then they might find a different way to soothe themselves. And I won't have to worry about :breaking: them from the habit later on.

I keep trying once every other day or so, but I guess it'd be best to deal with the screaming now [since they're already doing it] than later, lol.

Ours never did. They just weren't interested. We tried every brand out there. They went through a short phase for a couple of weeks when they found their hands where they would stick fingers or try to cram their whole fist in their mouths. Luckily they have given that up, too.

LoL, that's exactly what they're doing with their hands.. or people's shirts, blankets, etc. They've started to produce tears and boogers and drool about a week and a half ago. Since then, they've been drooling on whatever is close to their mouths when they're in that mood..

About how long until yours became un-interested?

The hospital gave them pacifiers after they were born. I figured it was ok... this way I wouldn't have to break them of sucking their thumbs.

Ours were given the Soothie brand pacifiers in the NICU and came home with them. They seem to soothe them quite well and they don't freak out too much if we don't reinsert them maybe b/c they are still so young. Anyway, I have tried to give them other pacis and they refuse to take them, so maybe you can find some Soothie's. They have them at Babies R Us.

Our were in the NICU and they gave them the soothies when they were there. Ryan stopped taking his at 5 months but Jack still really likes his and it does help to soothe him. We got lucky and never had the 'reinsertion' problem. I guess it was when it fell out, too bad. Now of course when it falls out he can re-insert it himself. I'm hoping though that it won't be hard for him to give up when it's time!

I might check those out. It would help to give them 'something' to suck on other than 'anything' they have their mouths next to besides their paci's of course :p

    Thanks for the tip.
