Pacifiers?

I know that introducing pacifiers might be a little controversial (I would love to hear your opinions!). For those of you who use them, is there a particular brand that your babies like? We have tried the "Soothies" but my babies mostly spit them out...maybe it is just their age and not the pacifier??

Andrew and Catherine LOVED their pacis and they nursed past their first bday. Elizabeth never wanted one. Mine loved the Gerber NUK pacifiers. Mine would still be fussy even when they weren't hungry and the paci helped soothe them. Some babies definitely have a high sucking need.

Mine had preemie soothies from the NICU for a while. Then I switched them slowly over to Nuks. They like the latex version. ALL of my EBF'd boys have used pacifiers with no problems or confusion.

Mine liked paci's until 4 months then refused them and then around 6/7 months liked them again. They liked the NUK's and soothies.

Mine liked them intermittently over the past 6months. For a bit when they were first born, and then not up until recently - actually they mostly play with them and suck on them as a game or when they are fussy during the day. They don't use it at night or at naps.

Mine liked them but they did spit them out too! We had all different kinds until mommymeg introduced me to the soothies and we never turned back. DS quit his at 3 months and DD still uses her only for sleeping which most times is on the floor so I think it is just to initially go to sleep. I am planning on weaning her around 1yr when she comes off her reflux meds.

My babies love their pacis... Molly likes MAMs and Stefan likes NUK. I tried the Playtex Binky's because when I bottle feed, that is the type of bottles I use, but they didn't like them! Go figure... anyway, Stefan used the MAM's at first in the hospital because that is what they use, but he kept spitting them out, but wanted something just to suck on... I had a couple of NUKs in a drawer that I had, and he loved them. Goes to show that they all like something different. I would rather my babies use a paci than their thumb or my breast! Also, the AAP, is saying now that it may help prevent against SIDS. I will do anything to help prevent that. It's worth it to me. The nice thing is that when mom says they are done with a paci, then I can just throw them away... can't do that with a thumb!

My mother is ADAMANT that the babies do not become thumb-suckers! She spent most of her time plugging and replugging the babies with the Soothie pacifiers I have :D I think I will try the NUK and see if they keep them in their mouths a bit better...

    Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

I used them and loved them. The babies loved them. I'm all for anything we can offer for them to soothe themselves. I don't see anything wrong with it. My girls take them now at bedtime only. At one year we're going to take them away, but they've served a great purpose.

LOVE pacifiers, LOVE them. Seems like every baby's brand preference is different, though. My older DS would only take silicone MAM, my twins started off with Soothies but quickly showed a preference for Nuk and now my DD likes Avent silicone. Just pick up a few to try and go for it!

I've never found pacifiers to cause nipple confusion, etc. I make sure to have the "pacifier fairy" come visit by 2 yrs, but restrict pacis to bedtime only at 1.

    Best of luck!

It took me a while to find a brand that my girls liked, were BPA free, and did not cause nipple confusion (which was a problem with Nuk). We settled on Playtex Binky Most like Mother. It fit all our criteria.

I hated pacifiers and swore I would never use them...... until I became a human pacifier. Now, I am a big fan.

We used Gerber NUK - Silicone - and both boys like them, though Jacob's mouth was too small for them until he was about 3 months old.

My girls had the Soothies for 6 weeks in the NICU. We've tried several others. I still prefer the Soothies, but DH thinks they like the Nuk ones better. They're quite a bit smaller. Either way, they don't keep them in their little mouths unless they really want them. Sometimes they can suck on them for 20 minutes, other times they spit them out right away. I think pacifiers are wonderful. They're great when the babies are almost asleep. You can pull a bottle out of their mouth & slip in a pacifier. They don't usually notice & they go to sleep. I love them!!

I didn't BF but DD's favorite became the Avent brand silicone...until she hit a year and then she was much less picky and would suck on whatever I had around (Nuk, Avent, Soothie, Gum Drop (the orange ones that look like soothies but have the nose cut out)...

BIG Paci fan here! I think that if it is something that soothes them, then why not?! It may be a struggle when they are 2 or whatever and you want to take it away, but I will take it for the help it has given me so far! The only ones mine will take (and they are paci fans!) are the ones from www.mypacifier.com ... they are actually pictured on their website in the customer gallery =) They are really cute and handy for twins b/c it has the name on them!

Wanted to add ... it is most likely the age ... mine were 2 1/2 to 3 months before they would keep it in ... once they got to 8 mos they could consistently put it back in themselves ... helpful while sleep training! I didn't feel as bad letting them cry when I knew they could re-binky themselves!
