Ok, for those who plan on using pacifiers or have used them in the past with previous babies, how do you decide what kind to use? Looking at them online...so many choices. Wanting to put some on my baby registry but can't figure out what is the best. I have seen a lot of pictures lately with babies using The First Years Soothies ,but really know nothing about them. Any tips on this would be great :) http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2792504

Before my girls were born, DH and I bought two each of three different kinds of pacis. The first ones we stuck in their mouths ended up being the only ones they would take for over a year. The Soothies have gotten really popular b/c that's what most hospitals give out now. We're going to try them with our new baby when he makes his appearance. First Years also makes a Soothie bottle set now. The bottle nipples are shaped just like the pacis so baby doesn't have to get used to another shape. And I saw at Wal-Mart the other day that Nuk is making bottles too with a similar shape as their pacis. That might be something to keep in mind, as well.

Our girls used the preemie soothies in the hospital and for probably a few weeks after that. Now all they will really take is the NUK with the silicone nipple. I think every baby is different, and it's all about preference. You may have to try several before you find one's your babies will like.

My daughter loved MAM by Sassy and so did we because there was no right side up, it also had vents. We plan on using them again with these girls

My DS never took one.. with the twins I recieved the Avent ones.. we wil lgive those a try and if they work great! And if not, we will try a few different brands.. One thing I am doing to help with confusion and germs, I am strickly buying only the same two colors.. one twin will be blue and one will be red.. that way they aren;t just randomly being used between both babies..

My twins do not take a pacifier, I tried 3 different brands and they didn't want any of them. My oldest was a paci girl though and it was just trial and error to find out which one she liked best. She ended up liking the Gerber Nuk the best.

Just out of curiosity, I've heard some moms say you shouldn't use pacifiers until breastfeeding is firmly established, otherwise the baby may never take to breastfeeding. Is this true?

My oldest one refused all pacifiers. My 2nd loved them and wow, it was much easier to travel, etc. We started out with the Mam ones, but my little stinker ended up putting the WHOLE thing in his mouth and that was the bigger size even. It scared me, so I switched to some Playtex ones that were bigger.

As far as breastfeeding/pacificers - I did start my son pretty early with a paci, I can't remember exactly but would guess a week or so after getting home from the hospital.

my daughter wound up really liking the Avent ones when she was an infant but the older she got she would pretty much take anything...my son decided since there wasn't any food coming out of the paci he didn't want one!

I've heard this as well. So I'm probably not going to use a paci for a few weeks - but we'll see. I plan on using the soothies, I've heard those are the best if you are breastfeeding.

I have read that a lot about bf'ing and pacifiers. Guessing every baby will be different.

I think each child is different in what pacifier they will take. I just kept going until they would consistently take one. Also, I never had a problem breastfeeding my two older kids (3.5 and 22 mo bf'ed 14mo and 18mo respectively) even though they took a pacifier. I distinctly remember with #2 working extremely hard to get her to take one to give my breasts a break.

We tried a few brands until we found ones that worked. My daughter took the Nuk ones originally, then later switched to MAMs. DS always took a MAM, but needed the larger size (6+ mos.). He couldn't keep the tiny ones in!!!

And based on experience, FWIW, the color coding works until they are old enough to reach for each other's binky! You will soon learn to accept the fact that they will share EVERYTHING....including spoons, binkies, sippies. Heck, if DS was still hungry and DD had an ounce left in her bottle, POP...in went HER bottle into HIS mouth. And that was at one week old!

I started mine with pacis the day after they were born and I have never had any problems with bf. When they were really little they would only really use the Avent pacis. They went through a phase where they didn't want them at all and then I just decided to try some new ones after 2 months of not using them. I bought MAM and they LOVE LOVE LOVE them for some reason. If they aren't in their mouth they are holding them and chewing on the side

Paci use is all trial and error from my experience. Some never take them, some love them all. My oldest liked any and all paci's and the twins like only this random off brand I find at Target. The twins will share paci's so I wouldn't worry about them having certain colors. As for ones that have the same nipple as the bottle, that didn't work here. They got so mad when the paci wouldn't give them the milk they wanted, they screamed and screamed and wouldn't take the bottle again.

As for BF'ing and paci use, my oldest took a paci when he was about 3 hours old and BF like a champ for almost a year. The twins never caught on to BF'ing (being preemies and trying for 9 long weeks, I gave up and pumped), so I don't know if it affected them, but they weren't huge paci fans in the beginning anyway. The nurse told me in the hospital with my first not to suffer through the crying, they need to suck on something to soothe themselves and they quickly learn a paci is NOT breast and it won't give them food. They aren't shaped the same or do they feel the same. It's the bottle nipple that can cause confusion with BF'ing because it does give food like the breast. I learned that the hard way!

    Good luck!!

We are using the Soothies because that's what the NICU gave them when they were in there. They seem to love them!

I was told the same thing by the lactation nurse; she told me to wait 3 weeks. But then, she also had me using a nipple shield when I nursed.....and I didn't see the difference between that & the pacifier, so we used it earlier. I did have problems BF, but I don't think that had anything to do with it. Some babies just get confused, though, with different things in their mouths.

As far as what kind.....that just depends on them. :) We got the NUK brand & both mine took to them very well. I liked it b/c it seemed to resemble most the shape of a real nipple in their mouth.

We have diffrent colored ones and during the day it is very easy to tell the difference, but at night pink & purple sure look a lot alike especially when you are half asleep and can't focus so good. I figure my girls are right on top of each other all day long and I am not going to worry about germs to much.

My first son had to have one, My other 2 didn't want anything to do with them, So before you spend money on them -most hospitals will have them. See if they take one first. Other wise you are spending money you could be using towards something else.

I would suggest trying a few different styles on your babies after their born and see what they like.
