If you're breastfeeding, then most LC's would have you wait 4-6 weeks, but if you're bottle feeding, then I don't think there's an issue.

Key is not to let a baby hide its hunger cues while using a pacifier.. so use it cautiously.

Mine started on pacifiers in the hospital from day one. I had read that they may help prevent SIDS so I always gave them pacifiers before they went to sleep.

I think that as long as they can suck, a paci should be fine.

My guys had them immediately. In fact, the first time they came into the room, there were paci's in the little carts with them.

We introduced them in the hospital as well. I wasn't breastfeeding, and they wanted to suck on something all the time.

Same here! We introduced immediately - in the NICU in fact. Mitchell takes his pacifier OK but Nina rejected it most of the time until we found a new one. We have been trying different ones with some success. With my older DD she loved hers and it was a LIFESAVER.

I had actually NOT wanted to give them to them till much later, but they gave them to them in the NICU before I even saw my babies for the first time!

NICU nurses had them on pacifiers as soon as the breathing tubes came out, which was day one, at just over 30 weeks. It was so funny to see the big huge pacifier cover almost their whole tiny little faces!

They definitely helped a lot in the early months. Without us even trying to wean them, though, they both decided around 3 or 4 months that they didn't care for them anymore so we don't even use them now. Don't know what we would have done without them earlier!

We decided not to use a pacifier. I didn't want to have to break them of the habit later.

Mine were in the NICU for three weeks and they had them in their mouths from day one. The green Soothie brand. We have moved to the Mam brand, w/orthodontic nipples. I know they're controversial and some say that they cause nipple confusion: well, one of my girls latches beautifully and nurses all the time and the other is a difficult latch and gets mostly bottles of expressed breast milk. I have no way of knowing if it's due to her having had a paci. But my feeling was: anything that would soothe my babies who were now in plastic isolettes in teh hospital instead of inside me w/each other was just fine by me.

I try to be discriminating in how i use them; when they really need to soothe, instead of in their mouths all the time (i read one study that said that babies who use pacis have less interaction in public because they are less likely to smile and engage w/others, but- my girls are VERY smiley and engaging and frankly i don't need them to engage w/every stranger who walks by!

One thing is that i try to never use them when i'm not going to be close by to put them back in - inevitably when they go down for a nap and i go downstairs to get something done someone has a Binkie Down! emergency and i hve ot run up the stairs. One way to get back in shape!

If you're not nursing, any old time is fine. If you're nursing, wait until that is going really well.

With the twins - I used the paci immediately. My pedi told me it lowers the risk of SIDS - I was BF and formula feeding at night and they had no problem latching on. Unfortunately, now neither baby likes the paci but it helped in the beginning when all they wanted to do was suck. Good Luck! Things will get easier as time goes by - I am still on the roller coaster ride - my twins are 6 wks old tomorrow.

I would say go for it. Do whatever you have to do to help them soothe. It may take some pracitce though for them to get the hang of them. You might have to keep putting it in their mouth or holding it for a minute or so until they get a good suck on it. So don't give up right away if they seem like they are spitting them out, kwim? No time like the present, I say. If they will take one, it can be a lifesaver.

I think that is around the time I gave my girls a paci. They are close to 3 1/2 months now (and have been sleeping from 6:30-6:30 for a few weeks now). I plan on weaning them off of them at 4 months. I did the same when I had my son. I don't want them to get too attached and not be able to sleep w/out it. Guess who will have to get up to give it to them??
