my girls dependency on the pacifier to fall asleep and to get back to sleep during wakenings is getting to be too much. They'll fall asleep initially without a problem, but then only sleep 30 minutes before waking up (both) and wanting the paci back and then for the next hour (during naps) i'm putting it in every 5 min to every 20 minutes...

I feel like their dependency on it is really affecting their sleep quality and duration but weaning seems impossible. I can't rock and soothe both babies at the same time. For those mom's who purposefully weaned (not the baby gave it up on their own) how did you do it and what age where your babes? Should I only try to wean one for now and then the other seperately? are they too young to learn to self soothe?

thanks in advance for your help!

I was in the exact same boat as you when my girls were younger. At 4 1/2 months adjusted (about 7 months actual) we did away with binkies Cold Turkey when we started CIO. It took a couple of days to adjust, but they haven't needed/wanted a pacifier since. GL!

I did it at about 2 months. I spent one night putting binkies in every 10 minutes and I just couldn't do it any more. They did cry a little. I wouldn't call it CIO but they did have to fuss a little. One finally found her thumb a few weeks later and that has been heaven (I know I will regret it later).

I wanted to try to make it through without having to do CIO, I mean a little fussing is one thing but hysterical crying is another. I'm trying to follow the no-cry sleep solution book but it's hard with two....

so if they didn't suck on a pacifier, how did they get themselves to sleep? did they suck their lip or tonge like some babies do or just didn't need to suck at all?

I lived this h*ll for a long time. DS is a binkie fiend. Eventually, he figured out how to reinsert the pacifier by himself, but that wasn't until he was about 6/7 mos. adjusted. Until then I went in every hour and binkie'd him. Now, I leave about 6 binkies in his crib. I often find him in there with a binkie in his mouth, one in each hand and a couple on his chest. I fear finding him in a similar state when he's older -- just substitute the binkies for beer cans!!!
